Before people learned music with 'do re mi', the sequence once began with 'ut' as the lowest note. The absolute lowest note recognised in medieval music was 'Γ ut', with the Greek letter gamma, and 'Γ ut' came to refer to the full range of possible notes. This is behind the phrase 'run the gamut'.

I paid for my first computer, a ZX Spectrum by making hundreds of corn dollies for a woman in our village who dressed them and sold them on. That was a weird few months. £1/Hr and the computer was £129. I also washed up at an old people’s home and shovelled gravel also for £1/Hr.

Literally just learned this now at Bristol's MShed museum. This must be what the nursery rhyme Pop Goes the Weasel is about.
'We had 500 to 600 customers on a Monday... and it was always the women who came. They brought in their husbands' suits, shoes and wedding rings and on that they raised enough money to see them through the week.'

Jesse White, a worker at John Swaish's pawnbroker's shop in the 1900s

The pawnbroker

The number of pawnshops in Bristol has varied across time, responding to social need. A hundred years ago people could 'pop the weasel' (pawn their weasel and stoat/coat) in over 50 pawnshops. They got a cash loan on their belongings, and could buy them back (with interest) on payday. It was a form of credit open to all, and a vital service in times of unemployment and recession with no Social Security. By the 1960s most had closed down but the number is rising again.

Raselle's pawnbroker's shop, Stapleton Road, 2010

Bristol's oldest pawnbroker opened in Old Market in 1796, and was taken over by Amos Raselle in 1894.

Below, a separate post:

Meanwhile Govt launches £75m publicity campaign to urge us to reduce water use & privatised water companies waste 19% thro leaks. Madness"

A cylindrical tube module. It consists of a U-shaped metal frame forming a handle, with a vacuum tube and some electronic components (resistors and capacitors) mounted on insulating disks. At the bottom of the module, nine metal pins allow the module to be plugged into a socket.
