The Magnificence of Tony Todd
In honor of the actor's passing I wrote about his tremendous and remarkably different performances in "Candyman" (1992) and the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" 1995 episode "The Visitor".

What I hate about so many current popular cishet white romances. They're narratively written as a "blank" white lady (with 2 lovable quirks!) so you can see yourself as her. They employe present tense & 1st person POV to crank this up. Many are incredibly dull & shallower than a single rain drop.

Again and again, the people who are "protecting women" by banning trans women from sports and bathrooms think that it's wrong to punish literal gang rape. News at 11.

Okay, hive mind, what are your favorite vampire books you'd read for a work bookclub? Romances are a no go. But they read Songs of Achilles and "gross old white man lit fic," so not much else is off the table. I thought of A Dowry of Blood and Certain Dark Things. #Booksky #Vampires

The people who are arguing that bookstores can just take the place of public and school libraries have never seen the children's section. The reason there is a 40-50 book limit for most patrons is kids books. The sheer volume that kids read through is beyond most adults' understanding.

being so fr when I say that transmisogyny has put feminism back like 50 years

what i thought we had distanced ourselves from was the reduction of women to vaginas and wombs and the ability to bear children. i thought we had progressed past 'dresses are for women and pants are for men. i thought we progressed past the idea that someone is less of a woman if she does not adhere strictly to beauty standards. i thought we progressed past the idea that naturally being comfortable adhering to highly feminine standards is vulgar. but i (sarcastically) guess no one could have predicted that trans-exclusive feminism would be the downfall of all the progress we've made

120th read of 2026: Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart My issues were the repetitiveness, the focus on Agnes, & the narrative's emotional distance. Alcoholism's a terrible disease, but in itself isn't interesting. Everything I disliked, Stuart fixed in Young Mungo, a book I loved. 3/5 stars #Booksky

What Gene Roddenberry wrote in the #StarTrek Motion Picture novelization on the topic of Kirk/Spock and Kirk's sexuality from Kirk's POV. Kirk perfers women, but has experimented. And the modern shows have Spock (and other Vulcans) having sex more than once every 7 years, Kirk's bigger hangup.
From the novelization. It says:

part of his life that it had represented. He had long ago decided that he would neither return to that place nor move among its people ever again.

Jim! Good-bye my my t'hy'la.* This is the last time I will permit myself to think of you or even your name again.

It was at this exact instant that a shockingly powerful consciousness imposed itself unex-pectedly into Spock's mind. It was almost as if some powerful entity had been searching the

*Editor's note: The human concept of friend is most nearly duplicated in Vulcan thought by the term t'hy'la, which can also mean brother and lover. Spock's recollection (from which this chapter has drawn) is that it was a most difficult moment for him since he did indeed consider Kirk to have become his brother. However, because t'hy'la can be used to mean lover, and since Kirk's and Spock's friend-ship was unusually close, this has led to some speculation over whether they had actually indeed become lovers. At our request, Admiral Kirk supplied the following comment on this subject:

"I was never aware of this lovers rumor, although I have been told that Spock encountered it several times. Appar-ently he had always dismissed it with his characteristic lift-ing of his right eyebrow which usually connoted some com-bination of surprise, disbelief, and/or annoyance. As for myself, although I have no moral or other objections to phys-ical love in any of its many Earthly, alien, and mixed forms, I have always found my best gratification in that creature woman. Also, I would dislike being thought of as so foolish that I would select a love partner who came into sexual heat only once every seven years."
