Dirt-bike middle school kid would probably have been at the top of the coolness hierarchy that day in my middle school. Parent pickup line, in addition to being dangerous, was also uncool.

“Where do babies come from, mommy?” Mommy, not wanting to explain sex: “you see all those houses that look the same? They spawn there, welling up from the bathtub drains wrapped in a visceral slime.”

Thinking back to how frequently I’d refer to NRC Canada test data and research when consulting. This kind of institutional research is invaluable in the construction industry, especially for basic information about sometimes niche topics.

Electric cars are the perfect thing for 差不多 manufacturing. Long-term reliable machining of precision containers for thousands of explosions per second requires decades of expertise to perfect. Meanwhile, Tesla can have inch wide gaps in their body panels and their cars still move well.

“The wine industry faces challenges beyond Canadian boycotts. Consumer demand is shrinking because boomers — the industry’s biggest fans — are aging out of the wine market. Younger generations drink less alcohol in general and are less likely to choose wine.“ but yes, also…same as it ever was

the clear and correct answer is to remove all intersections by reworking the street grid into a single snake-y car route through the city against a free-flowing grid of walk/bike/trabait. No intersections, no LoS.

This is cool— apparently @adamtranter.bsky.social transformed a street parking space into a parklet (mini park/public space), but the municipality removed it because it wasn’t a mother vehicle. So he did this. Nice job. And dumb interpretation by city hall. Via Marco Te BrommelStroet on LinkedIn.
Pictures of a mini trucka-like vehicle with a little park/park bench on the flatbed in the back. So essentially a mini park on top of a vehicle.

Regulating noise in cities is vastly about transportation, industrial, and HVAC sources. These are the loudest and most consistent dominators of the urban soundscape, and policy and technology can address them. Street life can be a *positive* sound source even.

I usually carry mine around the store as a visual explanation of why I’m brazenly loading things into a tote or carrying around an opaque bag. I wear a hi-vis vest sometimes too, but get a lot of questions from other shoppers about where things are like I work there

Some little signs here and there that upgrades might work well: - If you can use the parking lane most of the way as a bike lane, it might be a good bike lane - If driving in the neighborhood is a pain because of all the pedestrians, it might be a good candidate for pedestrianization

Possibly hot take - while this would be an improvement, the existing bike lanes on this road are also not great. Roads with multiple lanes in each direction should have hardened infrastructure by default, or you get ridiculous outcomes. Bike gutters on “speedways” is a band aid on a bullet hole.
Photo of existing bike lane on the Mukilteo Speedway. Two lanes of traffic abut a bike lane that is reasonably wide but only defined by paint and has at least one driveway crossing it in the distance.Google Street View screenshot of Brandon Boulevard in Brandon, Florida. Four lanes of traffic in one direction abut a narrow bike lane at the edge of the pavement. Several driveways cross the stream of bike traffic. Red arrows point out the bike lane, which is hard to see.

sort of hoping for a Roosevelting at a minimum, but a Vancouver West Ending should be done around all our big parks - especially ones served by two train stations

Instead of being situated at TWO golf courses, an interstate freeway, and 2.2 miles of barbed wire fencing, 130th Pinehurst station could be the site of thriving highrises and businesses, surrounding a flagship nature park. Imagine a Discovery Park the whole city can get to by light rail!

We’ve always called the stations golf course north and golf course south. I like to play a fun game of counting the golfers when u ride btwn the stations. Usually it’s like 10 I’m pissed that the new bus routes mean that I have to go to golf course north. Both are terrible stations, way too loud

This vote by mail system is superior to any in-person voting I’ve done. You get your very own personalized ballot. You can research candidates from the comfort of your own home - even judges. No lines, vote at your convenience. They track the status of your vote for your confirmation. It’s accurate.

I’ve lived almost all my life in fully electrified buildings thanks to living in places that either had cheap WPA-era dam electricity or very hot climates. It is crazy to me that people are still *putting in* gas lines. My new house came with gas and it is work to replace it with modern technology.

one thing I think about from my acoustics days is the different single-number metrics and statistics that describe sound, which is a bit like describing a video by averaging the colors of its pixels. If you hear the thing but the number says you don’t, you may have the wrong kind of number

I’ve definitely left stores with no bike parking before. Is that limiting e-bike adoption, or a store’s loss? Secure storage for cargo also makes trip chaining more possible. I visit 4-5 places to do The Big Shop and it’s limiting when I can’t leave stuff in the back of the bike while shopping.

*Jeff Foxworthy voice* You know you might be living the “urbanist“ life if you do the math and it’s cheaper to rent a car than to own one. You know you might be living the “urbanist“ life if you've ever had to drive your car for no other reason than the gas was going bad

This makes me wonder - who is Pike Place for? I’d shop there more but on weekdays a lot of their grocers only open during hours when non-retired people work. They want to double down on making the experience worse for people who don’t drive there (a lot of downtown residents and workers).

it’s pretty crazy that we still have people arguing to restore the third-worst* driving experience the city can offer * the other two are driving to the platform in Mt Baker light rail station and driving off the end of the pier as the ferry you want to take pulls away

this is the same newspaper that breathlessly published an article explaining the hot new concept of boba tea like five years ago
Classic New Yorker cover, “the View from 9th Ave”, which has 10th Ave drawn in great detail, the Hudson River beyond, and then the rest of the world as barely-detailed squares with “Japan”, “China”, and “Russia” as barely-visible mounds of earth on the horizon across a “Pacific Ocean” square. This is a visual representation of the provincialism of New Yorkers
