MIO
An illustration of Mio from Xenoblade Chronicles 3. The art is somewhat messily painted and brightly coloured. It's a thigh-up shot, and Mio is holding her flute up to her mouth. In the background, M is painted in lineart looking wistfully off to the left.

Discomfort is an essential part of growth and wouldn’t it be so embarrassing to be the exact same person thirty years from now, in a totally different world, because you were so averse to discomfort?

Once you start noticing how the incapacity to handle discomfort affects how people live their lives it's actually pretty shocking how it ruins pretty much every conceivable aspect of existence. Interpersonal relationships, romantic and platonic. Career and education opportunities. Your politics Your willingness to go anywhere. The kind of food you eat. The kind of art you expose yourself to and your ability to read it. It's never just one thing, it touches everything, and once you notice it it's like suddenly being able to see germs or something. Just this horrific catastrophe people look at you askance for screaming about. As I grow older and see what became of my friends and peers who could not learn to handle discomfort, the more I'm like. This is a genuine societal issue

“Earnestness is cringe” is just the mirror image of “cynicism is savvy” and the matching partner to “lol nothing matters” which is the fertile ground for fascism to grow. Hope is cringe. Progress is cringe. Change is cringe. Getting together with other people and imagining something better? Cringe.

Fascists lie all the time not to make the lies matter but to remove weight from the truth. In this way, sincerity is a weapon against fascism. It is how we embrace the heft of truth.

everyone’s gut reaction is going back to physical games but all digital feels like an inevitability even if it should be 10 years from now the real solution is better digital rights you shouldn’t have to check in online with a game you own, even if it’s on a hard drive rather than a CD

part of why I don't like AI is bc it's so often the antithesis of caring for the little things, the appreciation of the mundane, of seeing beauty where others haven't yet been able to, and seeking genuine fundamental understanding all in the name of "get product faster" I find it so disheartening

what a damning and accurate assessment
Let's consider the AAA video game industry as it both exists in 2026 and the direction it's heading in. The market has abandoned any form of risk-taking whatsoever in favour of an ever-slimming roster of formulaic sequels, live-service games and remakes. A God Of War game starring a mum instead of a dad is still a God of War game. A promising Star Wars racing game is a licensed title that's a spiritual successor to a 1999 release. Sony is pledging to release more live service games even as live service games bleed them dry from repeated gut shots. This year's big Assassin's Creed release was also 2013's big Assassin's Creed release. Almost everything AAA is doing is an attempt to wring the final drops of blood from a brittle and exhausted stone.

This one reply really struck me
Yoshiyuki Tomino, the anime director famous for Gundam, also emphasized the importance of studying stage plays, literature, and literary arts to cultivate a nuanced understanding of expression and reading comprehension.

That's why it's not uncommon to hear that works created by otaku with narrow knowledge, raised solely on comics, anime, and games, end up lacking any depth.

This has such a huge impact on people in rural areas who have to deal with ISP monopolies with unusable speeds. The industry wants to act like the infrastructure is there for this to be the way forward, but big tech is just trying to leave poor people behind.

piracy is the only extant form of media preservation that exists in games right now, you might find it morally reprehensible but there is literally no other institution that will keep games alive in 25, 50 years' time

PS really needs to re-evaluate their stance here. It’s one thing to reduce discs, but it’s another to outright back out. If physical gaming is to be minimized, should be treated like the current landscape of Movies & Music. Let boutique labels give the fans what they want.

The more I stew on PS announcing theyre ditching physical games, the more disgusting it gets. It’s one thing to reduce consumer options. It’s another to eradicate part of gaming culture you made. All those gens of people collecting, sharing, & supporting local stores just gone.

One option isn’t better than the other, it’s all just preference! If you like collecting physical media that’s great. But going back to that won’t solve the bigger problem of corporations having too much power now. We desperately need laws and regulations to catch up to the digital age.

Saying we should all go back to physical media I think misses the point. I actually *like* buying games and movies digitally for a bunch of reasons. What we need is better consumer protections so the things we do buy digitally are actually owned and companies cant delete/revoke access!

I don’t want this point to be lost in the discourse. Going digital-only means inequity for people who cannot afford internet or constantly purchasing new games. Libraries provide opportunities for people to experience games they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford, and that will be lost.

If you do not care about the little things, the big things you have to say just...won't matter. Nothing worthwhile is all pizzaz all the time. A love affair isn't only made fireworks, it's years of doing the dishes, little hellos, the touch of their hand on your back day after day after day.

Crucially they approached the entire film (and the whole Ghibli filmography) with the mentality that moments as small as this MATTER. It's not the shoe alone that does it. It's not the single flower pot, it's a group of passionate artists caring across every scene, beat, and item. THAT'S the magic.
