Also reminder to romance authors that we only shoot ourselves in the foot if we try to play the "but we're not porn" game. Those of us who write hot/queer already get clipped on a regular basis, but nothing is "respectable" enough. Your turn WILL come.

Just me being opinionated but using "romance" to describe your book that does not have a happy ever after or a happy for now ending is a very bad, no good idea. Hell hath no fury like the romance reader misled.

My cartoon for this week’s @theguardian.com books.
A writer leans back on her chair, scrolling on her phone with a cat in her lap and her feet on her desk. A message has popped up on her laptop “How’s that new draft coming along”

The writer thinks “Every time I slack off, I get an email from my editor. How does she know that I'm not working?”

Behind the writer is a window with long curtains. We can see a pair of woman’s feet protruding from the bottom of the left hand curtain.

I promise you, once you free yourself from the notion that other writers are your competition and start viewing them as your fellow weirdos who share similar special interests as you, your life in publishing will become so much easier.

Happy New Year! (my cartoon for @newscientist.bsky.social)
Two scientists share an office.
The first, whose half of the room is neat and tidy, says
“My new year's resolutions are to jog to work every day, choose the healthy option at lunch, and run a pleasant, well-ordered workspace.”

The second, working in a total mess, replies
“In the interests of scientific rigour, I'll be the control, and change absolutely nothing.”

never ever ever ever get mad at an author for promoting their book. even with a straight chronological timeline, they could post about it five times a day for a month and still have plenty of people miss it. algorithmic? forget about it. 90-95 percent still won’t see it

Today is the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who. I’m not a hardcore fan. But it's been a part of my life from a very young age.

My first episode was the first one with Jon Pertwee. New Zealand was transmitting the show a few years behind the U.K. in those days, so I’d guess I was about 7 years old?

It gave my younger brother Andrew nightmares, so he was forbidden to watch for a while.

I didn’t stick with the show. I dipped in and out during the Tom Baker years and drifted off entirely once he’d gone.

It was only years later that it re-entered my life professionally. I started doing some freelancing for Doctor Who Magazine and became the regular letterer of the comic strip in the 1990s.

I rarely miss an episode these days. I still don’t consider myself a hardcore fan. I love the idea of it more than the show itself - where the coolest person in the room is the really odd one, who solves problems through brains and kindness.

That’s as positive a role model as anyone could hope for.
