It feels wrong that software engineering was solved before IKEA furniture assembly, and yet it's so, so relatable

If you’re also fascinated by what people are doing with the fly connectome (and wondering what the fly thinks about all this) read “Lena,” by @qntm.org a very short story written like a Wikipedia article about the near future that may be waiting for us. qntm.org/mmacevedo

Hearing about how LLMs are solving serious math problems while one tells me that in my loft I'll have trouble moving around under the ridge as that's the lowest point. What a strange time to be alive.

Looking at the lineup and it seems that the talks are about Racket, not about LLMs

I don't understand why people like fitted kitchens. I don't see any advantage to having wooden doors in front of appliances and from a hygiene perspective making large parts of the floor inaccessible seems obviously bad

DNO only let me have a 6kw inverter and 3kw export for the 9.5kw(ish) array, I'm looking at strategies now. Most useful thing is the hybrid inverter means battery isn't passing over the 6kw limit as it stays DC so there should be a strategy that permits me never to shed load

I remain a bit shocked just how many of the requests to my website are direct agent calls now. It feels weird to be able to directly manipulate the context windows of tens of thousands of inquisitive tool-using LLMs...

it's fun to contrast the tech industry, who believe they're creating the future and so cannot be held accountable, and the media circus, who believe that they're serving the public interest, and so cannot be held accountable there's something about working in advertising that rots your brains huh

I found a real bug in Kubernetes through webernetes, my port of Kubernetes to TypeScript. github.com/kubernetes/k... I found it by using webernetes to visualise how liveness probes work and noticed they didn’t work as I expected. Thought it was a webernetes bug but it was a Kubernetes bug!

Liveness probe failure container restart leads to container starting up with started=true and liveness probes starting before startup probes have run · Issue #141155 · kubernetes/kubernetes

What happened? The full details of the repro can be seen in the Bash script below, but roughly: Start a container with startup and liveness probe. Wait for both to succeed. All normal so far. Flip ...

It was a trip to Jodrell Bank when I was 5 that ignited a love for science that took me through a PhD and beyond into a life dedicated to good evidence and sound data. Closing it doesn't just mean less science in the UK, it means fewer kids will get the spark that makes them want to do science.
