what i think is currently up in the AI space since we're having cost arguments again: selling inference is very profitable, but models are improving so fast that there's no time for capex on model training to amortize, so net at this rate they're losing money which is why they want a cartel

The often overlooked issue is not the jobs that people don't want to do. Of course there are weirdos who like to clean sewers. But work is work. No matter what, there will be dreadful or stressful parts. "Grad student" is as intellectual, desirable, and fulfilling as it gets, yet full of burnout.

One concept I tried out in a meeting this week was Determinations vs Decisions, and that our automations should focus on removing the non-expert brain work of making Determinations (there's a right answer) so our people can spend more time making more and better Decisions (no obvious right answer).

Introducing ONTOPAUSE™: An AI solution that automatically generates, resolves, and hides important ontological clarifications about the language you’re using, so everyone can reaffirm exactly what they don’t mean before going back to talking normally. Start not-stopping today!
A clean white-and-blue software advertisement reads “INTRODUCING ONTOPAUSE™” and “Automatically handles potentially anthropomorphic terminology so you can get back to talking normally.”

Under “WITHOUT THE INTERRUPTION,” a chat between furry-avatar users reads: ByteCoyote: “Is the AI done thinking yet?” A collapsed bar says “Terminological safety interlude · 3 messages,” followed by NullMarten: “Yes.”

Under “SEE WHAT ONTOPAUSE HANDLED FOR YOU,” the conversation repeats with the interlude expanded. NullMarten says, “By ‘thinking,’ you of course mean ‘performing inference,’ rather than implying a humanlike subjective cognitive process?” ByteCoyote replies, “Of course. You wouldn’t want to anthropomorphize! This was an informative and important conversational tangent.” NullMarten responds, “Indeed. My ontology has been reaffirmed.” A divider reads “End of terminology clarification,” followed by NullMarten: “Yes.”

The footer reads “ONTOPAUSE™” and “Have the discourse. Hide the discourse. Keep talking.” Smaller text below reads “Automatic ontology clarification for modern conversations.”

in which Ben makes the brave and true point that any analysis that assumes all CEOs want the same things is dumb as hell
I’m not convinced. Regardless of your interpretation of the recent Hugging Face hack, the fact that AI companies are creating software that is capable of performing sophisticated cyberattacks with some (yes, debated) degree of autonomy and self-direction is emphatically not the sort of thing that endears this technology to the normie CEOs of corporate America. It is, rather, a classic case of “scaring the hoes.” If you’re an executive who runs a hospital chain, or a big retailer, or whatever, you really don’t want agents doing weird, malicious, unpredictable stuff on your networks. And these are precisely the individuals who will have to buy enterprise AI subscriptions in large numbers for the investment math of the AI boom to work out.

Humans are bad at logic. Computers are good at logic. Decades of AI research have been spent at making computers worse at logic. This is the most important technological development of the century.

AI is getting cheaper more quickly than any other transformative tech in history. At a given level of performance, cost has fallen ~47%/quarter since 2023. That’s 4× faster than DNA sequencing, 6× faster than compute, 18× faster than lithium batteries, and (up to 1973) 54× faster than electricity.

Hot take (from someone who lives in SF and works in AI): the whole "AI sex cult" is complete online madness with no relevance to actual material reality. There are thousands of Dreamforce attendees in the city right now. I can guarantee approx none of them are thinking about Aella or Yud.

Alright here’s what I think about this. For me, this argument is a little bit slippery about what it means for a system to have “a final goal”, and takes for granted that any intelligent system must behave as though it has such a thing. I don’t think this is necessary, and I don’t think LLMs do.

ARC-AGI-4 has been scrapped and ARC-AGI-5 has been silently renamed to ARC-AGI-4
ARC Prize R @arcprize
X.com
ARC-AGI-4 will be a benchmark for autonomous open-ended innovation. It will continue our commitment to open-source, giving the research community a shared target for progress that benefits all of humanity.
Despite rapid model progress, humans still significantly outperform Al at open-ended invention. This is the meta-skill that unlocks progress across every field of technology.
Advanced Al capable of scientific innovation will lead to tremendous new technology, knowledge, and understanding. This is a positive-sum future.
We are deeply committed to advancing it.
Open source is the foundation for that progress. The knowledge behind frontier Al, not just the technology itself, should be broadly distributed among researchers, academics, and organizations. Any coordinated effort by the Al industry to reduce openness or concentrate access to frontier Al would undermine that positive-sum future. We are committed to advancing a future where everyone can contribute to and benefit from Al progress.

There's going to be a cut between shared infra that's built once and reused, and customized products. I don't grown my own grains, mill my own flour, or knead my own dough, but I cook my own pasta. Some go to a restaurant. Some others make their own sauce. We don't know where that cut will live.

A good thread on what would replicating agents look like, under different scenarios, because there's a lot of taking past each other. (Personally, I think the scenarios with 10s of thousands of stolen prod API keys is both the most realistic and most dangerous)

I’m pretty sure he means agents themselves, which can be incredibly lightweight. Still, just shut off the servers hosting the actual models. That being said, this stuff will be able to run locally with current architecture soon enough, much sooner if any of the other research directions pan out

Slow down frontier model development. Bring open weights to current frontier. Build out local inference providers, stabilize hardware prices, focus on cost and token throughput for a bit. Get our software updated to handle what's being thrown at us. I would not mind spending a beat on distribution.

"COVID runs on 200lbs of human. It's not going to just copy itself" The reality: all an out-of-control agent needs to propagate is an API key and a prompt. Once AI is part of core infra (and we want it to be!), shutting it down will be pandemic-level. We need to treat it like infrastructure.
