People no longer look for news that informs them. They look for news that confirms and validates their emotional reality. This is true here, but also when people report on - for example - what the median voter believes. Or the Israel/Palestine conflict. Or climate. Or economics. Or any issue.

For me, as a socialist and an Eastern European, March 11 is the day of the liberation of my people from a foreign oppressor we neither wanted nor deserved. The only road to socialism I am willing to walk has it as a milestone. If I am asked to reject it, I am out, full stop.

In my view a big issue with dirtbag leftism has always been that it’s more a social group than an ideology, which makes it easy for terrible ideas to spread, because the end goal is membership and acceptance and those things are conditioned on sharing views with the crowd

Y’all, I hate to rain on the dead bot parade, but the Yandex data center destruction doesn’t seem to have significantly impacted social media bots. I made temporal graphs of X posts about AfD around the time of the attack and there’s no sign of a sudden dip or residual impact on that conversation.

Another way I have been using it is churning through Salesforce data to get a general sense of failure modes in products - work that would have otherwise taken me at least a week can be compressed to literally 5 minutes

This is stupid. I use AI to perform tasks that are peripheral to my job function, such as pumping out a matplot lib script to graph data I want to present tomorrow rather than 2 days from now.

Perhaps I'm an outlier, but I really don't think so. I have some limited and regular use of AI as an engineering professional and it has only improved my efficiency and efficacy. It's about knowing how to use the tool. Hammers can hurt a lot of people if you choose to use them that way.

This would entail a total shift in the objectives and strategies of how our military and navy is used in the area. Iran remains our enemy, and the enemy of many other countries in the region. To abandon them while Iran presses its advantage would be disastrous.

I am not advocating for "finishing what we started". There is no world where we defeat Iran without massive economic mobilization that is just not politically possible. I am advocating that we manage and mitigate the regional consequences of this disastrous war by providing aid to regional allies.

I do not think idealism is naive. We need idealists to point the way to a better future. The problem occurs when the idealists let the ideal be the enemy of the good. How on earth is there any benefit to losing a senate seat, and weakening our ability to constrain the fascists in the white house?
