What kind of quixotic individuals would start a bookshop on an upper floor of a building shortly to be demolished? Our downstairs neighbour, Sidney Vard, said at the time: 'You're young men, starting off in business. And I don't want to discourage you. But you're bloody fools!'

Technically we don’t officially exist as our 1.5km “road” when built (1800ish) was never given a road number on modern mapping. We feel like Tom Hanks in that stuck in the airport movie. We mow it ourselves. The ditches love ❤️ ❤️ SUVs.

We are entering "interesting times". The (very simplified) post-war economic system has been predicated on the idea that there will be a growing population who all want more stuff so creating the money to buy stuff. But the world population has passed "peak baby" and longevity is a ceiling..

If you look very carefully, behind the Renault 4 turning to drive down Grafton Street, above and slightly to the right of the lime green car, you will see the black signboard of Books Upstairs in its first home. Established 1978. The sign came a little later, so the photograph might be early 80s.

But it would enable a government to forge ahead to make a EEA-style (or by then, a Canada style!) Single Market agreement with the EU. Joining the EU is a major constitutional-like change that must require a referendum (and I think the EU would worry & shy away if it wasn't put to a popular vote).

Small parties that burn intensely bright but short (usually due to being utterly destroyed in subsequent elections) often have the most long term influence in our system. Clann na Poblachta, the PDs, the Greens. Rural right-leaning breakout will be next probably? In PR-STV votes have consequences.
