If you see this, recommend a short book: hortus animarum - Sienna Tristen The Empress of Salt and Fortune - Nghi Vo Penric's Demon - Lois McMaster Bujold The Practice, the Horizon, and the Chain - Sofia Samatar The Forest God - Jamie Lackey [yes, I know it's more than one but I love short books]

#Caturday. My bike. No, it is not too large for me. I will not be taking further questions. [N.B. It is not perhaps as clear as one could wish, but she is balanced on the seat of a bicycle.]

Hello, it's that time again, what did folks read in September that you loved? I had a very enjoyable month. I devoured 5 books from Rachel Neimeier's Tuyo series, all of which I enjoyed very much. AND I re-read 3 books from Victoria Goddard's Greenwing and Dart series, which I enjoyed very much...

Update from the reading front: I'm undecided about what to read next. I plan to do this by reading the start of four books and then picking the one I enjoyed most. Here are the 4 contenders:
Photo of 4 books: A Death at the Dionysus Club (Melissa Scott + Amy Griswold); Three Parts Dead (Max Gladstone); Blindside (Michael Mammay); Bodies of Magic (Freya Marske)

#Caturday. Myself, age 7, with my first cat, Bilbo. And to go with it, the first mention of the cat in The Sign of the Dragon (from the poem Shazia).... Three months later, the night before Xau rode to war, he gave Shazia a black kitten, a purring softness.
Old Polaroid photo of myself (then 7 years old), a part-Chinese girl with thick-rimmed glasses holding a black kitten outside near some sweet peas.

I have seen at least a bit of only 17 shows on this list, but I am pretty sure I would have put The Great British Baking Show in my top ten. (It's #85.) And, yes, I liked The Wire when I watched it twenty years ago, but where is Taskmaster?! That's the type of cutting-edge TV that I need nowadays.

This is a very good (though upsetting) article. N.B. My mother argued with my father to send me to a private school and paid the fees herself. I have no doubt I benefited from her decision. I was one of a small minority of non-white kids in a good school from age 4 to 17.

An update that is neither writing-related nor poetry-related: I had my 4-year check up for cancer recurrence and no sign of recurrence was found. I had become quite anxious about this check up, so I am very relieved (understatement). Sending good thoughts to one and all.

Hmmm. Thinking about it, these three poems are part of a 60-plus poem follow-up to a 300-plus poem follow-up to a "standalone" poem written in 2013. Yep. Things didn't go precisely according to plan.

Mary Soon Lee @marysoonlee.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
Finished, hah! It now appears the (repeatedly) "finished" poem required a follow-up poem. Did I mention that the first poem was itself a follow-up poem, though, in that case, more major than the seed poem. Is writing anything ever fully finished, not just temporarily abandoned?

I read this news late last night and it's taken me a while to think what to say. And I haven't found anything, except to repeat that it is a great loss and a great sadness to speculative poetry. By everything I know, David was one of the good guys and a pillar of SFF poetry. Alas, alas.

One day early, but what did folks read in July that you loved? The SFF book I most enjoyed was "Last of the First," the latest in L. E. Modesitt, Jr.'s long-running Saga of Recluce. For poetry, I liked Akua Lezli Hope's 2026 book "Telepath" and Holly Lyn Walrath's 2023 chapbook, "Numinous Stones."
