I don’t think current models will trigger true doomsday scenarios, but this is a good illustration of how advanced AIs will take a poorly specified goal and run wild with it. It’s terrifying, and OpenAI is basically just bragging about it, probably with zero repercussions or real lessons learned.

10 new math discoveries from OpenAI. LLMs are often dismissed as “stochastic parrots.” And yeah, that’s sorta how they work? But with results like this, you have to conclude that a sufficiently advanced stochastic parrot somehow gains some emergent, completely unexpected abilities.

There are moderates in the Democratic Party who've called to expel the D.S.A. from the Democratic coalition. And I want to flip that around. Is there room in the party you want to create for moderate Democrats?
Yes. Full stop. I'm not interested in expelling people from parties. I think that's what you do when you can't win the debate within the party.
Even if they work with AIPAC? If they are Democrats and they run as Democrats and they win as Democrats, then they should be a part of the Democratic Party. There are people with whom I have vehement disagreements with on any number of topics. But if we can find a place of agreement, that's what I'm going to focus that relationship on. If you're just looking for people who you agree with on everything, then you might as well just stay home and look at a mirror.

More evidence, from a large-scale study in China, that using AI hurts learning if it undermines mental effort. When homework time drops due to AI use, so do test scores. Across studies, there is a clear theme: AI tutoring in support of classes is good, using AI to "help" with homework is bad.
