Speaking as a parent, what I want is for my kids to be happy and healthy. If that means being far away from me, so be it. Any parent who demands their kids sacrifice themself to please Mom and Dad has failed as a parent, IMO, and I hope their kids get far, far away.

And we don't even need to go back that far - in MY living memory, it wasn't uncommon for people to work through Christmas in the shire. Hogmanay was our winter festival, when everything shut down for 5 days. Christmas as it's celebrated now is absolutely an incomer effect. 2/

I’ve been thinking about what I want from a new DW, and this is a good basic sine qua non. I’d also say some specific things: 1) It’s supposed to be “an adventure in time and space” — this should be the core of it all, not the emotional trials & tribulations of the companions.
