Excellent post by @matthewbarnard.phd which includes this insightful point about UKHE's 'hostility towards intellectualism' 👇 Thank you for writing the piece @matthewbarnard.phd
The present crisis on UK Higher Education is primarily a crisis of funding but it is also a crisis of conviction and of hostility towards intellectualism and any other forms of expertise. It's a crisis that requires trade unionism, along with its respect for 'the trades' themselves. It may sound odd to describe academia as 'a trade', but it is. And, like any trade, it is vulnerable to false claims of redundancy.

Will we accidentally lose our capability in geopolitically key languages as universities close provision? on.ft.com/3Hw6eq3
Hetan Shah, chief executive of the British Academy, the UK's national academy for the humanities and social sciences, said it was
"sensible for universities to have more regional conversations about how they provide languages to students".
But he believed the bigger and "longer-term question is, what languages do we think we need strategic provision in nationally, and how should that be safeguarded?
"It would for example be geopolitically unwise to find ourselves without capable Russian or Chinese speakers. While it's easy to turn off the tap, it's much harder to turn it back on.
