From once assuming it would be shit I'm now in the odd position of finding SNL UK better than SNL US. A low bar admittedly.

How popular he is a mystery to me. I'm fine with "anti-woke" comics if they're talented but I'm not seeing it in him. Three times he's hosted SNL, three times he died on his arse.

I went down a bit of a rabbit hole on this and while I had never heard of him until SNL fired him a few years ago I think it's because SNL want to have their cake and eat it. They want the Joe Rogan pricks but their long established audience don't, you can actually hear the studio audience wince.

I'm not clear on what Shane Gillis thinks women should wear to at the gym if not shorts. Ballgowns? They'll be wearing swimsuits at the pool next.

Noseying around the Creative Writing Master's degrees on offer in our fine country and so far the most expensive I've found is the Cambridge MST in Writing for Performance, which is £25,494 (or £50,988 for overseas students) and starts with this video, with a misplaced apostrophe in the title.

I have so much genuine respect for this as level of pedantry. Curse of being a former bookseller I can spot an out of place book on a shelf at a hundred metres.

I like the modern updates to the new Carrie series, the acting is fantastic and I REALLY like that the kids LOOK LIKE SCHOOLKIDS. Love love love the Brian De Palma movie obviously but when you see schoolkids who look like real teens it makes it super-obvious that everyone at Carrie's school was 26.

Her late husband used to tease her about it. “Is there anyone on television you like?” he’d say. Bob Mortimer and Mrs Doyle in Father Ted. I think that’s it.

Jimmy Carr is as far as I can tell a bit of prick in real life. In fairness exactly like he is on stage. The kind of comedian who only likes comedians.

In the 90s I was the MC of a tiny comedy night in Soho where new and established acts would go to try new material and RG was there to see Robin Ince and his laugh was so distracting. It was like being heckled.

I think the Billy Connolly thing with my mum is based on meeting him briefly in the 70s pre fame. He was quite well known and there was a buzz about him but he hadn’t done Parkinson yet and it was at some press do with my dad. She called him an arrogant shit. I never got to the bottom of why though.

Graeme Swanson @swansonian.bsky.social · 2h
My mum’s said that! I have a bit of sympathy for his laugh because one can’t really help it. My laugh has been described as “A dirty bellow” Luckily I don’t do it as often as Carr.

To be fair, I understand Jimmy Carr. I’m not his biggest fan either but I don’t think my mum keeps up with who played the Riyadh comedy festival to the same level as me.

There isn’t enough room on the internet to name all of them but the first that springs to mind are Billy Connolly, Alex Jones (the One Show presenter) Ronnie Corbett, Harry Hill, Jimmy Carr, Alan Carr, Monty Don, everyone on the Antiques Roadshow, the BBC News’s crime correspondent. Sandi Toksvig…

I was the perfect age for the tv show I think (ten) I don’t think I even knew it was a radio show first until I was about 14. I remember they had the Zaphod head on Blue Peter or a similar show. It was on at 9 o’clock so I had to beg to stay up.

Exactly as predicted: Elder abuse. This is from Danny Trejo’s son, Gilbert Trejo. Not only did Ben Shapiro’s camp trick the elder Trejo about what the movie really was, he apparently signed a contract barring him from even putting out a statement about it.
For anyone seeing this shit with my dad...
He was booked on a film, it's not pro-ice, it's not overtly pro anything. His agent described it as "a complicated story about a complicated time, where everyone looks bad except you, the hardworking Mexican shop owner who just wants peace"
He jumped at the idea of playing a good guy.
About 2 weeks into shooting everyone, including us, found out Ben Shapiro was involved.
My 82 year old dad has never heard of Ben Shapiro, I had to explain to him who that is, and what kind of guy he is.
My dad contractually can't bad mouth him, the film, or walk away without being sued for breach of contract. He couldn't even release the statement he wanted to.
It's fucked up. He's handcuffed to this stupid project, and swaths of people have instantly turned their back on him without knowing any of the facts.
Ben Shapiro got Mexicans to abandon one of their heroes, got his own name to the top of google's searches, and made us look like angry fools lacking any nuance. He wins.

I think the tv show is more fondly remembered by a particular age group. (Mine, basically) also I came to it through tv first and I suspect a lot more people did than is usually acknowledged when I read about it.

I realize it often feels like nothing matters anymore, but a comedian going on SNL and calling women whores— calling the ordinary women he sees at the gym *whores* — because of their clothes matters to me. It’s really gross, and I’m glad Levy said something.
