The US President's new proposal to tax international students has been approved by the White House for release this week. It's an unprecedented $100,000 tax on int'l grads who stay to work after graduation on Optional Practical Training (most grads do), a crucial bridge to remaining by any channel.

If I understand this, two mathematicians (one at Anthropic) combined a great deal of human effort with LLM input to come close to a famous problem, showing that the Navier-Stokes equations of fluid mechanics developed singularities. But someone from OpenAI might have peeked at their ChatGPT logs...

This profile has been scrubbed from the site. Rose Ferreira grew up without reliable electricity, immigrated to NY, then survived homelessness and cancer on her way to NASA. She was so moved by images from the Webb telescope she wept. This is what’s at stake web.archive.org/web/20231206...

My wish for the future: 1) government data sets receive DOIs and 2) data.gov facilitates automatic mirroring of the entire archive.

Incredible photo via Potomac Riverkeeper today (credit: Nathan Hitt) of the Shenandoah River, muddy with polluted runoff from Helene, meeting the Potomac at Harper’s Ferry.
Aerial photo of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers converging. Green tree-covered hill on the left, the town of Harper’s Ferry in the middle. Two bridges cross the water. The Shenandoah on the left is murky brown; the Potomac is green-blue. A sharp line between them.

Such a warm summer in Europe would have been practically impossible in pre-industrial times. Under the SSP2-4.5 scenario, a summer like 2024 will be unusually cold in 2100.

In which YouTube personalities were paid $100,000 per video to generate fake content while I, a real climate scientist, supported the development of my PBS Global Weirding YouTube series on real climate content out of my own pocket resulting in a net $ loss. You can’t make these things up.

can you believe we used to make solar energy by letting plants convert sunlight to sugar, waiting a couple hundred million years, digging them up, and setting them on fire
