I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Elizabethan playhouses were supplied by a network of tailors, merchants & craftswomen. Their names survive in records, but little is known about their lives. I’m working on new research that brings the stories of these makers & traders centre stage. Here is the project in biscuit (cookie) form. 🍪
A photograph of eight rectangular biscuits (cookies) arranged in two rows on a square white plate. The plate is framed on all sides by a trailing vine pattern in green with pops of red. The biscuits are mostly in shades of ivory, cream, yellow, and grey, with a burst of vivid red and blue in one corner of the arrangement. Moving across the top row of biscuits from left to right, the designs include: neat lines of handwritten names in an early modern parish register; a section of a hand-drawn map from 1561 featuring St Paul’s Cathedral, with street names like ‘Carter Lane’ visible in a tiny spiky font; an extract of text from a funerary monument printed in an early modern book, ending ‘So transitory is our glory’; a section of embroidery from a funeral pall featuring metallic silver armour, crossed gold keys, and two hands holding up a crown. The biscuit designs on the bottom row include: horses prancing past shopfronts on Cheapside in the mid-sixteenth century; a receipt written in early modern secretary hand, which is difficult to read; a portrait of a stern-looking women dressed in a ruff, pearls, and sober dark clothing; swirling calligraphy and dense secretary hand featuring on a will dating from 1638.

Oh heavens! It is hard to be kind to ourselves. Which is why we need friends who recognise that the darker days will pass. And I can see how many beautiful things you share with us. I'm so impressed by your honesty. Maybe time for tea and sleep? Xx

A 7th Century pillow name stone in St Hilda's church, Hartlepool, an Alpha and Omega above the name Hildithryth. It's one of a number from the cemeteries of the Anglo-Saxon monastery that stood on Hartlepool Headland and which are occasionally unearthed under streets and in peoples gardens. 1/2

A personal story about that phrase “young men of fighting age” applied to asylum seekers. As many of you know I took in a young Ukrainian woman under the Homes for Ukraine scheme. As part of that process, soon after she arrived we were visited by the local authority rep and a Fire Brigade rep.

The story I heard was of a lecturer talking about this who at the start introduced the class to his favourite pencil, "Penny", a gift from his daughter. Throughout the lecture, he'd every so often note something down and say "thanks, Penny". At the end, he snapped the pencil in half.

Masked thugs turning up to intimidate and cause disorder have no place on our streets. I am asking whether our laws are fit for purpose when it comes to groups that organise intimidation and disorder. Political disagreement is part of democracy. Violence and intimidation are not.
