You usually hear about the frontline city of Sumy because of russian attacks. Today I learnt that Sumy State University and the University of Liverpool have launched a joint research project on technologies that could make cities and infrastructure more resilient. Amazing!

Every week I plan (at least, that’s something I can plan) which book to buy from my long wishlist. Besides the books that fell on me accidentally. Yes, I actually read them. Today, in Kyiv with my new book. I encourage everyone to read. If I can, so can you.

Late night in Kyiv. Another drone threat has just ended. I cannot sleep. Ordered some books. The publisher whose warehouse was hit the other day suggested buying the books that survived. They have traces of fire or water damage. They called the initiative ‘The Fire Didn’t Finish Reading’.

It was perhaps one of the loudest explosions I’ve heard nearby in a long time. And now I’m reading that a drone hit a residential building. Close or not, I just hope everyone is alive. Yes, it’s Kyiv.

Sunday morning in Kyiv. Emergency power outages again after russian strikes. The window is open, bringing in the sound of generators. Covering myself in a blanket of autumn sun and sipping a warcoffee, I’m going to write a letter about what it was like to live in Kyiv this week.

Do you also care about what future generations will think of us? Of what we did or didn’t do? Our actions now shape the lives they’ll have. We are stuck on what’s best for us. And it’s our biggest failure.

I’ve never seen anything like that. A chestnut tree is blooming in Kyiv. In October. No, it’s not a massive ‘trend’. Other trees are just like trees in autumn. Yellow, red, bald, tiredly green.

Kyiv. Saturday. Emergency power outages after russian attacks. Such a sunny day. The metro stopped running for a short time. I want to visit KYIV ART FAIR. Missile attack. Explosions. Still want to go.

Kyiv. Autumn rain and generators are back. Drone threats all day long. Explosions as part of life. Power returned after another scheduled outage.

The sculpture I saw today evoked so many emotions. It’s the strongest image of Ukrainians I’ve ever seen. TIRED, BUT NOT BROKEN 🇺🇦 Yurii Myrko Ceramics, artist’s own technique

Again and again russia destroys Ukrainian books. After each strike on a book warehouse, I film how Kyiv bookstores react. Today, my favourite one. In the video: some books by Knygolove, whose warehouse was hit yesterday. The bookstore asks people to support affected publishers by buying a book.

russians kill children, women and men, the young and those whose hair has turned silver. russians destroy homes where someone had breakfast yesterday. They burn warehouses full of books. putin is evil. But this evil has hands that kill, destroy and burn.

A few minutes in Kyiv. Drones and a power outage not on the schedule. Someone is stuck in the elevator. My upstairs neighbour is going to look after her mum (97) in Sumy, closer to the frontline. A woman on the street asks where the nearest shelter is. I see her fear and take her to a safe place.

Late morning in Kyiv after the overnight attack. Soon, I’m going to my workout. As usual on Wednesdays. Perhaps you’ve read about the casualties and damage. Not only in Kyiv. I hope you have. I don’t open the windows. The city is covered in smoke.

Kyiv. Power outages are back in our lives. Today, we got the outage schedule. Keeping a detailed war diary helps. I checked it to see when the outages began last year. On the night of October 9-10, russians attacked our energy system. We had no power for over 15 hours. What will this year bring?

Kyiv. I am in my favorite bookstore. That means I crossed the Dnipro River. Trains of my metro line run across it again with some restrictions. Relief. I write more about how Kyiv and I live in the letters. Sunday Letter from Kyiv. Sounds good.

This is the dome of the Boim Chapel (1609-1615) in Lviv. It was a burial chapel for the wealthy Boim family. At today’s lecture, I saw this dome again. Next time I’m in Lviv, I’ll go inside the chapel and show you. As promised earlier. Gorgeous.

Something unusual is happening in Kyiv. Calm. Since last night. It’s 4 pm. This calm feels like a spider’s web. Delicate. Fragile. May the spider keep doing its job.

Kyiv. Early Sunday evening. I went to have warcoffee at my favourite place. Drones? Frequent uninvited ‘guests’ during the day. One of the bridges was hit earlier. People are out, doing the same as I do: living their lives.

These days there’s so much talk of a nightmare waiting for Kyiv: we’ll freeze with no water or electricity, and strikes on bridges connecting the two banks will cause a logistical collapse… I don’t say times are or will be easy. But I stay in Kyiv. This panic benefits russia.

Autumn in Kyiv. It’s a beautiful Saturday, from time to time disrupted by russian drones.

While putin is desperately fighting with bridges in Kyiv, we find solutions. I’m in an absolutely beautiful Telegram group, where people can ask for a lift from one bank of the city to another or offer one. I love reading messages there.

Late Friday morning in Kyiv. No, I won’t go to the right bank of the city as I planned. Why? The bridge I use was hit again at night (for the third time). And traffic on some other bridges across the Dnipro River was restricted. So, traffic jams are inevitable. I'll wait. I'll wait.

Evening in Kyiv. I’ve lost count of how many air raid alerts we’ve had today. Another one has just ended. A russian drone hit the bridge I mentioned earlier. Again.

This is what I was afraid of. russian drones struck near the support structure of the Pivdennyi Bridge in Kyiv. It connects the two banks of Kyiv across the Dnipro and it’s the one I use. Metro and other public transport across the bridge have been stopped while engineers inspect it.

Kyiv. Thursday. Morning. russian drone hit a school in one of the city districts. The mayor said that the children were in the shelter. I had two cups of warcoffee. These days, I brew more than usual.

Drone attack in Kyiv. We have had only 52 minutes without an air raid threat since midnight. It’s 3:37 pm here. I took my camera and went to the city centre. Because life should be lived even under such abnormal circumstances.

Morning in Kyiv. A drone attack has been going on. From time to time, I hear our air defence. I ground coffee beans, warcoffee is brewing. During the night, there were also missiles. Damage in the city, casualties, and I’m waiting for my coffee to brew.

Kyiv. Such a beautiful moon. The National Academy of Sciences, a medical centre, residential and office buildings, a petrol station, a café, a warehouse and critical infrastructure were among the places hit or damaged by russian drones today. Autumn. There are casualties.

Yesterday I sent a letter from Kyiv. In it, I looked at three wartime accounts from WWII to find an answer to what we call the middle of a war. Each letter can be the last one. And it’s a reality we live in here.

Bloody hell. A russian drone struck a building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in central Kyiv. A fire broke out. People trapped inside had to climb out through the windows to escape. There are casualties.

Kyiv. Monday. Drones. As I wrote in my diary today: ‘… because drones have become part of our life, let’s say like a coat draped over the shoulders in autumn.’ The workout was cancelled. My coach isn’t feeling well. I’m reading the replies to yesterday’s letter. Luckily there are people who care

All day long, Kyiv was under attack by russian drones. Residential buildings, schools, kindergartens, petrol stations, office buildings, data centres, cars - just some of what was hit or damaged. Midnight came.

Kyiv. Air defence is shooting down drones. I finished writing today’s letter. russian drones found a new target - data centres and internet providers. Perhaps I’ll go out for a while. Yes, it’s not safe to wander now. But we have to live somehow.

russia has been attacking Kyiv with jet-powered drones. It’s the first thing I see when I check our media. Every morning. A cup of warcoffee is waiting on the table. The sunlight steps in.

I am reading about the damage caused by russian attacks in Kyiv last night. Maternity hospital, warehouse, cars, houses… Two people killed. It’s raining. I had two cups of warcoffee. The drone threat has lasted more than 7 hours. I don’t know what has lasted longer: the rain or the drones.
