Tucked away in West Yorkshire is a hidden piece of transatlantic history perfect for the Fourth of July. The Triumphal Arch on the Parlington Estate in Aberford is Britain's only monument dedicated to American independence. Built in 1783 by the eccentric, whig-sympathising
Known as the Parlington Arch, this striking stone monument is a unique triumphal arch situated on the historic Parlington Estate near Aberford, West Yorkshire. Commissioned by Sir Thomas Gascoigne and constructed between 1781 and 1783, it was built to celebrate American victory and independence following the Revolutionary War. Commemorating this pivotal historical moment, the bold inscription across its frieze reads: "Liberty in N. America Triumphant MDCCLXXXIII" (1783). Image: John Davidson CC BY-SA 2.0

Revising for my resuscitation course, I'm reminded of the Ipswich episode of Cabin Pressure... "Hey, chief, I might be wrong, but I think we're flying into a mountain." #cabinpressure (Disclaimer for serious Bluesky people: am aware of the importance of effective communication in emergencies)

Regardless of whose fault the collision was, running over a fishing boat, shouting "are you crazy?"at the crew as they are abandoning into a liferaft, then failing to stop and assist until reminded by HM Coastguard of the obligation to do so, all seems like quite bad form. @dreadships.bsky.social ?

Hana-Rawhiti Maipa-Clarke, a young Maori woman, stands in parliament performing the haka. She is dressed in a neat black suit with a pale turtleneck and has long, dark hair. She is tearing up a copy of the divisive Treaty Principles Bill. Her eyes and mouth are open wide to shout. Rawiri Waititi, a heavily tattooed Maori man, gestures in parliament as he opposes the Treaty Principles bill. His head is shaved and his face is covered in intricate tattoos. He wears a striking red shirt under his olive green coat, a string of yellow, black, red and white chunky beads, and a huge carved bone necklace. Debbie Ngarewa-Packer, an older Maori woman, stands to raise a point of order in Parliament. She has a moko kauae (traditional chin tattoo) and neat dark hair in a bun which spills over her shoulders. She wears a dark sheer blouse and a large carved bone Hei Tiki necklace. She looks serious.
