A somewhat daft and unsavoury nerd, driven by madness and doubt, hungering for truth and novelty. Painfully British, puzzlingly male and surprisingly over 40.

It's only been 90 years since the Battle of Cable Street. I hope these "Black Shorts" meet the same reception.
A yellow and blue RNLI lifeboat speeds across the waves carrying several bedraggled figures to safety, whilst from the distance a series of all-black clad figures standing on a sea wall shout through a megaphone "Traitors! Whose side are you on?" To which the pilot of the lifeboat replies "Life's".

Starbucks Workers United @sbworkersunited.org · 25/08/2026
🚨BREAKING: Our union of over 12,000 baristas are officially calling for a Starbucks boycott. Read this statement penned by Starbucks workers on why a boycott from ALL customers, allies, and organizations is necessary to fight back against corporate greed:
BOYCOTT STARBUCKS is written inside a zig-zaggy speech bubble against crumbled paper. Beside it are the Starbucks Workers United logo and an image of a coffee cup being poured out.We, the 12,000 and growing members of Starbucks Workers United, call on everyone who stands with working people to boycott Starbucks until they finalize a contract with union baristas and stop union-busting.
What we’re fighting for is simple: a minimum $17/hr wage, enough hours to live on, better staffing in our stores, and basic workplace protections. Every year, our living costs rise but our wages don’t keep up – a growing pressure many American workers are feeling as corporate greed accelerates unchecked in our country.
Starbucks is banking on customers' blind loyalty to the integrity and values this company once stood for in order to keep squeezing them for profits. At a time when working-class people across the country are struggling in a challenging economy, it is no longer possible to be both a Starbucks customer and in support of workers; choosing to spend money at Starbucks is choosing a law breaking corporation over the baristas who make your coffee everyday exactly as you ask for it.
Starbucks has violated U.S. labor law more than any other company in modern history–the NLRB and its judges have found that Starbucks committed hundreds of labor violations and there are currently more than 550 unresolved unfair labor practice charges still pending against the company. Instead of finalizing a fair and reasonable union contract, Starbucks has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of care for the workers who fuel the company’s profits by wasting millions of dollars on AI and technology that doesn’t work, launching countless gimmicky drinks designed to distract from real problems, and inventing pointless policies that do nothing but make our jobs harder.
This ongoing, irrational behavior by Starbucks and its refusal to settle a fair union contract with workers leaves us with no other choice than to call for a boycott. We know when working people stand up together, we win.
No Contract? No Coffee.

if “tens of millions” of british people wanted a “full blown revolution” they would be protesting outside parliament. as it happens, dozens of british people are chucking bricks at asylum seekers, so i’ve come to a different conclusion about what it is these people want

my neighborhood 7-11 closed a couple years ago and tried to reopen but couldn’t get the permit approved because there’s a preschool next door and 7-11s sell alcohol (the previous permit was grandfathered in). i saw a fence going up around the lot recently and looked up what was moving in: a gun shop

I'm not a football fan, but I love the idea of England and Norway, neither famed for their strong relationship with the sun, playing in Miami. Two teams enter, two teams leave. Very pink. This is Sun-derdome. Don't worry about all the people in leather and chains, those are just native Floridians.

Two successive social media posts. The first says "Ok, doomscrolling is bad but have you seen the quality of the doom this week?" while the second says "It's only doom if it comes from the Mount Doom region of Mordor, otherwise it's just sparkling abject terror."

Listen, if a Bad President can come in and take away our rights and we're dependent on a Good President replacing them in four years to give us back our rights, then we do not have any rights.
If politicians can take or distribute them, then they're not "inalienable" and they're not "rights."
We don't have inalienable rights we have conditional privileges, divvied out according to the whims of whoever currently holds the reins.
And if we want to have actual rights, then we must build a system in which no one has the power to take them away to begin with.

So I just found out that there's a book from the 1930s about the rise of a fascist president in the US. The book's called "It can't happen here" and the president's name is Windrip. I don't know about you but to me wind-rip could easily be a slang term for a fart. Similarly to trump.

After WW2 there were Nazi hunters who went looking for those who had fled to places like Argentina. After the end of Trump's reign do you think there will be ICE hunters who track down the thugs wherever they're hiding? Either officially or unofficially.

Cambridge has some very picturesque spots.
Looking down a narrow lane at night, lit by street lights. An old churchyard iron fence on the left and an old stone building on the right. A tree in the churchyard spreads out over the lane and creates a dark tunnel.

Here’s a short poem about the power of poetry to change the world.
The Power of Poetry

with things falling apart
and anarchy let loose,

it was only poetry, he found,
which had any use,

so he reached for his copy
of The Complete Works of Yeats

and bludgeoned the President
of the United States

A while back, someone posted about whether Pinky and the Brain were still in business, because they were interested in hearing Brain's proposal for world domination. Someone replied and said that at this point they were willing to hear Pinky's. I think about that a lot. (Also, Laundry Files FTW)

I propose a new term for current AI. "Intelligoid". In the same way a cuboid looks kinda like a cube but isn't and a factoid looks like a fact but isn't - an Intelligoid looks like intelligence but isn't.

There's an image from history of the little old lady with a spinning wheel sat by the fire making clothes for her family. I just want you to know that, having spent two evenings de-tangling spools of PLA for my partner's 3D printer, the old girl had it easy!

Twitter accounts are based in Russia. BlueSky accounts are based in homes with, frankly, too many books, plants, obsolete cables, and pieces of rustic pottery, that could do with a bit of a tidying up, to be honest.

New awareness campaign
A digital poster in the style of a World War II propaganda piece. Isolaed on a yellow background, a normal, squarish, 20-something guy with glasses is sitting working on a laptop. A ghostly figure of Hitler has his arm around the guy and is grinning and shaking a fist triumphantly looking at the laptop screen. On the lid of the laptop where an apple might otherwise be is an openAI logo, bright green, and dripping green ooze down the lid. Text on the poster, in combinations of sans-serif type and brush script reads:
Using Generative AI?
You’re prompting with Hitler!
GenAI is a Fascist Project!
Try using your brain instead
Don’t surrender your creativity to the tech billionaire’s control

Interesting how many modern developments align with ideas that have been around for centuries. For example, nowadays people say "Because of the Algorithm" where they used to say "it must be God's will". Or they say "I love AI!" Where in the past it would have been "Ia! Ia! ChatGPT F'tagn!"

Some say the world will end in fire. Some say in ice. Now from what I know of desire, I hold with those who favour fire. But if it were to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate, To say that for destruction ice, Is also great and would suffice.
