NYT has now independently corroborated all the major allegations against Susan Collins in the ProPublica report, including that investigators were prepared to move against her and then Trump intervened to shut it down. This put Trump in a position of exceptional and extortionate leverage over her.

If Republicans have had a belated realization that gerrymandering is bad, they should work with Dems to ban it entirely. I suspect though that they think it’s just bad when it happens to them. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
I suspect, however, that Republicans have not had this realization, and that they simply believe that disenfranchising Democrats is good but disenfranchising Republicans is bad. If that’s the case, then this race to the bottom will continue indefinitely. On Monday, Trump called the new maps a “shameful effort” to “silence the voices of Virginia conservatives.” He either didn’t remember or didn’t care that he had set off this whole process by demanding that liberals in Texas and other Republican-controlled states be similarly silenced. In fact, the president complained in a post today that the election had been “rigged” by virtue of the fact that all the votes—including mail-in ballots—had been counted.

The people who profited most from the cancel culture/free speech panic were less interested in actual freedom of speech than establishing their own control over public discourse. You don't even have to take my word for it. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2025/1...
Every society that has ever existed has had views that are mainstream and views that are fringe. The free-speech frauds who captured the discourse over the past decade understood this, but their true objection was that they did not unilaterally have the power to define which was which. For example, in a 2018 Times column, Weiss complained that “leftists” were engaged in a “concerted attempt to significantly redraw the bounds of acceptable thought and speech.” This was meant to sound sinister, menacing. In fact, this is politics. Every faction is always trying to “redraw the bounds of acceptable thought and speech.” In a free society, the government allows people to have those arguments. Such disputes are not a threat to free speech; they are free speech. When I say that CBS News’s Bari Weiss understood this, you needn’t take my word for it. In November, shortly after being given the reins to one of the oldest broadcast-news organizations in the country, Weiss used identical language to describe her own project: “I think it’s about redrawing the lines of what falls in the 40-yard lines of acceptable debate and acceptable American politics and culture,” Weiss said at the Jewish Leadership Conference. “And I don’t mean that in, like, a censorious, gatekeeping way.”

What’s the difference between her “redrawing the lines” of acceptable speech and other people doing it? What makes one “censorious” and “gatekeeping” and the other not? Well, because she gets to decide. That’s what so much of the free-speech panic was ever about: making sure the right people were in charge of what you see, hear, and read. Notably, this has very little to do with reporting the news, which is supposed to be what CBS News does. But if the point of installing Weiss was to ensure that she would gatekeep on behalf of right-wing interests, that is precisely what she appears to be doing.

From @privateeyenews.bsky.social:
Lily Allen Album Decoded
The Eye tries to get to the bottom of the biggest mystery in popular music. Who is Lily Allen making coded references to in her new album 'My Ex-Husband is a Bastard'?
Track 1: Beardy Bastard
This first track has got the whole world guessing. Could it possibly be a reference to David Harbour? Or is it a more obtuse reference to Jeremy Corbyn or possibly Brian Blessed?
Track 2: Harbour is a Bastard
Lily often talks about auto-fiction in her own work, which makes it difficult to fathom the exact meaning of her lyrics. This could be a reference to David Harbour, her ex-husband, but it could equally be about an unhappy childhood trip to Portsmouth. Perhaps we will never know.
Track 3: The Bastard from 'Stranger Things' is a Bastard
'Strange Things' is a song in 'Toy Story', sung when Woody realises he is no longer Andy's favourite toy and has been replaced by Buzz Lightyear. So this track may well refer to Lily's failed relationship with an absurdly optimistic astronaut, who had promised to love her "to infinity and beyond". Or could it be about 'Stranger Things' actor and Lily's ex, David Harbour?
Track 4: My Ex-Husband is a Bastard who had an Affair with a Costume Designer who is a Bitch
Don't be fooled by the jaunty reggae backbeat, this is a profoundly negative song, and it's possible that Lily is referring to recent events in her own life. The ex-husband could be a reference to her actual ex-husband David Harbour, but more likely this is an astute political allegory about Boris Johnson or possibly Matt Hancock, with 'costume designer' being code for PPE supplier.
Track 5: I'm Going to Get my Revenge on my Beardy Bastard Ex-Husband David Harbour from 'Stranger Things' by Writing an Album Telling the World What a Beardy Bastard He Is
This is perhaps the most obtuse and impenetrable of all Lily's complex and nuanced lyrics on this puzzling enigma of an album, but it seems to be a bittersweet reflection on love, monogamy, polyamory...

Purdue to the rescue of IU student newspaper, whose institution was attempting censorship. Details in alt!
Sara Whitmer
• • •
1h • 8
I'm sure many of you have heard by now that earlier this week, IU k*lled the print edition of its student paper, the IDS. The issue that was supposed to print this week contained criticism of the Whitten regime and IUs further slide into scist control, and they couldn't allow that to happen during Homecoming, when all the rich alumni are in town.
Enter Purdue! The Purdue student paper, The Exponent, owns its own presses. Yesterday, in an act of tremendous solidarity with their biggest rival school, they printed the forbidden issue of the IDS. They then drove it to Bloomington overnight and stocked all of the IDS boxes on campus, just in time for Homecoming.
Solidarity is what makes us stronger, and solidarity will be what ultimately allows us to triumph, if we can ever truly get it together. I hope everyone has a fun, safe day if they're going out today, and I hope we can think about what acts of solidarity we can begin taking to really make this movement MOVE - beyond a permitted expression of upset into more active resistance.
