Notably, we seem to have avoided those price highs by drawing down basically every kind of inventory to eye-wateringly low levels. Those inventories will need to be rebuilt and until they are, the ability to weather an additional shock is very minimal.

And that is not a funeral memory for a specific soldier, but a triumph pillar for a campaign showing the distinctive features of it. It'd be like if there was a monument to Ceasars campaigns in Gaul which has Legionairres fighting both ways a la Alesia

Alongside "who built Hadrian's wall?", another great example of knowledge falling foul of 'common understanding' is scurvy. The Royal Navy discovered the cure for scurvy, won the Napoleonic War, humanity then lost that knowledge without realising, then got saved by two Norwegian guinea pigs 🧵 /1

Wait US colleges regularly have multiple campuses in different cities? That would always count as a new university where I live. No wonder attendee numbers are often so high if they can be spread across a state

Far right violence against asylum seekers in the Netherlands. After a fire was started near the municipal building that currently housed 15 asylum seekers, far right protesters attacked police and obstructed firefighters. Fortunately, eventually the fire was put out. nos.nl/artikel/2614...

IMO a lot of countries are currently governed by a kind of desperate "no please not alt right" coalition. Sure, a couple countries have a "right and alt right" coalition where part of the coalition would like Trumpism at home, but most don't

I'd like some more small scale stuff. "What if the rail bridge at Wesel had survived WWII" is an idea I've been playing with in my mind. Thinking of what kind of things would be needed to get the Boxtel-Wesel railway to the modern day & what side effects that would have in the area

But it works quite badly when you learned a thousand quantitative methods and you need a qualitative one here. Generally ime it works okay so long as you stay in STEM but translates much less well to humanities, with economics maybe inbetween? 2/2

I studied data science and some classes were heavy on the "you learn methods here and then learn domain specific things to work with at a job". And that works well when the domain specific thing is "we make water so a temperature reading of 200 degrees is wrong" 1/?

It does seem like a lot of the business analysts are refusing to recognize that the logic of war is rather different than the logic of markets and this is, in fact, a war - however indirectly waged at the moment. 'How long will the war last' - well the mean war duration is more than a year.

Dutch policy started as "look guys, nothing concerning is going on, continue life as normal", but as prices started rising and Belgium made a price ceiling, they decided to just let the price (including significant taxes) rise. Colleagues with cars are unhappy but I think it's better in the long run

a fun law fact is that the crime of "assault" is not actually hitting, but threatening to hit. "battery" is hitting. that's why you hear "assault and battery" together so often. the threat is the crime because it's the threat, not the hitting, that breaks another's will. much to ponder.

A thing that bothers me as a rhetoric scholar who studies propaganda, the public sphere, & democracy is the way that propaganda eliminates or frustrates the public’s ability to do sense-making. It’s hard to know what to think when no one else does either & there aren’t common facts.

The famous Andor line is that "tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle." Here is a perfect example of that through malicious compliance: Idaho forced the city of Boise to remove its Pride flags. So the city painted rainbows everywhere else.

Boise took its Pride flag down. But new art has popped up at City Hall. What it cost

I think this is BS, because tournaments require at least some higher nobles to be invested, but the Targs could just... personally burn down the keep or people doing the biggest violence that year among the high nobles, and I believe in a decade all high nobility would learn to not do that anymore

There is also a "double food production for a year" spell. It requires a 5th level druid, but a country with lots of druids could conceivably have said druids make a circle through the realm and bless every hamlet. This may be how elf forests maintain the numbers to defend against non-forest realms
