Ritual mountaineering axe with heart‑shaped openwork. Japan. Nanbokucho to Muromachi period, 14th century AD. Forged iron head; wooden shaft spiral‑wrapped with a bronze strip; H 179.8 cm, blade 28 x 25.5 cm. Collection: Nara National Museum. Classified as an Important Cultural Property.

Those two hearts are not about romance. In Japan they are inome, the boar’s eye, a very old apotropaic sign cut into weapons, temple fittings and even windows to draw off misfortune and summon courage. The motif has been in use for well over a millennium and you can still see inome windows at temples like Shōju‑in in Kyoto.
