I've started working on the indie press article, and have immediately realized that it's more involved than I remember from last time. My 2024 aim was to give a historical overview, which turns out to be significantly easier than a contemporary overview.

Novels published in the 2020s included Shola von Reinhold's LOTE, Alexandrine Ogundimu's The Longest Summer, Kuchenga Shenjé's The Library Thief, and Denne Michele Norris's When the Harvest Comes.[31] Kuchenga Shenjé praised the nuanced intersectional transmasculine narrative within the 2020 novel The Vanishing Half, by cisgender author Brit Bennett.[12]

For what it's worth, I think the 80/20 rule goes both ways here. Yes, 80% of the bulk is crap. But I also think it's true that only 20% of the authors are producing 80% of the schlock. Producing good art takes time, and inevitably those books will get drowned out.

Aside from being a quiet image rehabilitation project in the wake of a 2025 scandal for dating a MAGA cop, I found Laverne Cox's Pride Month memoir uninspired and bland, albeit heartwrenching at times. I bought this in an airport, and that's about what you should expect.

1000% I can promise that we will appreciate something very simple, nondescript... heck, you could do a solid color combo that goes with your genre and is literally just SOLID COLOR, and it would be better than the genAI cover slop.

I chose to have a totally non-descript cover rather than one created from the theft of other people’s work. It’s probably costing me sales, but principles don’t just matter when it’s convenient. Plus, if you’re willing to use AI for a cover, how can a reader know you won’t use it in your writing.

There are, AFAIK, much fewer trade pub releases by transfem authors this year than in the previous. Judging by deal announcements this year, 2027 is going to be even worse than 2026, which is worse than 2025. All the more important to support selfpub transfem authors tbqh.

Can't believe I'm saying this, but this may be a contender for the best trans nonfiction of 2026. Hands down the most accessible account of American trans history, with a shocking amount of nuance and depth behind its arguments. I consider myself very well read, and I learned a lot here.

I heard she was sick, sad to hear about this. One of the original pioneers of contemporary transfeminism. In addition to her feminist work, Emi was also a major promoter of transfeminine literature for a Japanese audience. She translated many summaries of Western trans books into Japanese. RIP.
