Our Editor-at-Large did not mince words at all on Fourth of July:
The absurdity of building an isolation facility in Kenya for American citizens who might hypothetically contract Ebola — even though Kenya has no cases and the outbreak is in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, two countries away — cannot be overstated. As an American passport holder, it's another addition to a growing list of things I find embarrassing.

Not only does this reinforce the monolithic “Africa is a country” mindset, but it also reveals how out of touch the American government is. I cannot imagine a scenario in which any American citizen would want to be quarantined in Kenya — not just Nairobi, but Nanyuki — a town not exactly known for cutting-edge healthcare or technology.

The founder we should talk more about is Thomas Paine, who will fuck your shit up every time. Here he is in The Rights of Man just ripping into any ideas of "originalism" and that kind of garbage.
Every age and generation must be as free to act for itself, in all cases, as the ages and generations which preceded it. The vanity and presumption of governing beyond the grave, is the most ridiculous and insolent of all tyrannies. Man has no property in man; neither has any generation a property in the generations which are to follow. The parliament or the people of 1688, or of any other period, had no more right to dispose of the people of the present day, or to bind or to controul them in any shape whatever, than the parliament or the people of the present day have to dispose of, bind or controul those who are to live a hundred or a thousand years hence. Every generation is, and must be, competent to all the purposes which its occasions require. It is the living, and not the dead, that are to be accommodated.

Our new analysis found that the Supreme Court is deciding more cases through largely unsigned orders (the “shadow docket”) than through its standard procedure. Many have allowed the Trump administration to enact some of its most controversial policies. Read more: propub.li/44KNj2O
A line chart shows the number of Supreme Court decisions on the merits docket versus the shadow docket from the 2003-04 term to the 2024-25 term. The merits docket decisions trend downward over time, ending at 56 decisions, while the shadow docket decisions rise sharply in the 2018-19 term and surpass the merits docket in the last term at 63 decisions.

Happy Pvt. Marshall Sherman Day to all who celebrate
Private Marshall Sherman is a white man with dark mustache and a surprisingly modern face. He was a member of the 1st Minnesota and stands in front of the 28th Virginia battle flag in a black-and-white photo. He captured the flag on July 3, 1863, during the Battle of Gettysburg when the 1st had an 82% casualty rate and was outnumbered 5 to 1. In the photo, his arms are crossed and he looks satisfied and defiant.

The state of Minnesota still has possession of the flag. The state of Virginia periodically asks for it back, to which the answer from Minnesota governors (DFL, Republican and Independent) is always basically "lol come and take it."

Equality of all before the law. The law defined by all of us, collectively. Welcoming the poor, the sick, the huddled masses yearning to be free. Granting them, and those here, the best chance possible at a life of dignity (best accomplished, in my view, by social democracy).

A post from @matzollerseitz.bsky.social reads:
