I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

5/ Why does this matter? It suggests a general principle of brain plasticity: lower-level cortical maps provide stability, while higher-level areas have more freedom to adapt to our experience and how we use our bodies. S2 may mark the transition between the two.
010
Ella Striem-Amit @striemamit.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
4/ And we found where that shift seems to happen: secondary somatosensory cortex, S2. S2 sits between the primary body map and higher-level action areas, and here its organization had already shifted from being constrained by body anatomy to being shaped by experience and function.

Ella Striem-Amit @striemamit.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
3/ We found a striking divide: the primary body map remained tied to anatomical neighbors, while a higher-level touch area normally selective for the hand shifted toward the feet. Lifelong experience can reshape some levels of the brain far more than others.

2/ We studied people born without hands, who use their feet for many everyday actions, to ask whether brain areas normally devoted to the hands can change what they represent.

New paper in iScience. In the mirror box illusion, you see the reflection of one hand where your other, hidden hand should be. Over time, people report feeling the hidden hand where they see it, not where it is. We found that the qualia of this illusion differ across individuals.
Figure showing five types of time course for the mirror box illusion. Each row shows a series of mirror box diagrams over time, with perceived hand position in red. Sometimes participants abruptly feel their hand is where the mirror reflection is (abrupt trials). Other times they feel a gradual shift from the actual toward the reflected position (gradual trials). Some trials fall in between (intermediate trials). On other trials, they feel their hand is at the reflected location as soon as they open their eyes (immediate trials). And sometimes they experience no illusion, perceiving the hand where it actually is.
