I also want to share an update from our topographic ANN work led by Haider Al Tahan (not on bsky!). What does adding topography actually do to a model’s internal representations? Does it make is more brain like? Let me tell you about TopoAudio! #neuroskyence #neuroscience #brain #neuroai

I want to underscore an imp. point for the NeuroAI community. If you ever run 'localizer' analyses directly on ANN units, pls check if they survive an independent localizer test (most likely they will not).

Excited to first share @alishdipani.bsky.social 's study. Alish asked a (deceptively) simple Q: Are category-selective units in ANNs actually like category-selective regions in the brain? (why is this imp? read until the end). #neuroskyence #neuroscience #brain #neuroai

New in Neuron 👁️🧠🧪: Can AI help a cortical visual prosthesis control what the brain actually does after electrical stimulation? We used a bidirectional implant to model and shape stimulation-evoked activity in human visual cortex. doi.org/10.1016/j.ne... #UCSB #AI #BionicVision #Neurotechnology
Schematic comparing three methods for producing a target neural response with a cortical electrode array: direct 1-to-1 mapping, a learned inverse model, and gradient-based optimization. Each method generates a stimulation pattern that is passed through either a simulated forward model or tested in vivo. Resulting neural responses are shown as electrode-array heatmaps, illustrating how closely each approach reproduces the target pattern.

When we started scanning human infants 13 years ago, it seemed likely that functional responses in infant cortex would be qualitatively different from adults. Instead we keep finding similarities between infants and adults. Even for scene perception, despite the slow development of navigation.
Image of brain activation when infants look at movies of visual scenes, showing activation in three cortical regions: OPA, PPA and MPA.

Shared ancestry and convergentevolution may generate similarities in preference across speciesand underlie Darwin’s conjecture that some animals “havenearly the same taste for the beautiful as we have.” In this study,we show that humans share acoustic preferences with a rangeof animals, that the strength of human preferences correlateswith that in other animals, and that humans respond fasterwhen in agreement with animals. Furthermore, we foundgreatest agreement in preference for adorned, ancestral, andlower-frequency sounds. humans’ music listening experiencewas associated with preferences. These results are consistentwith theories arguing that biases in processing sculpt acousticpreferences, and they confirm Darwin’s century-old hunchabout the conservation of aesthetics in nature
