It’s remarkable how many people can move on a street when those people don’t feel the need to always take a massive car with them. Mobility in cities is about space.
Busy European street with buses filled with people in a long line of people on bikes, waiting for the light to change in a separated, protected bike lane. Imagine if all those people or each in a separate car.

More public transport systems are adding monthly or weekly fare caps, so regular users can avoid the hassle and upfront expense of preloading a Pass. Victoria should do this too, especially now we've got Tap And Go.

No more buying TTC monthly pass upfront: Fare cap starts Sept. 1 | NOW Toronto
Starting September, Toronto commuters will only be required to pay for 47 trips, with the rest of their rides free for the month.

Removing an outdated parking mandate is a win. But what happens next may be even more interesting. Projects get more flexibility. Older buildings become easier to reuse. Cities learn what people actually build when the mandate is gone. Have a parking reform story we should know about?

Evolution of parking controls in a London street. I used streetview to look at Lamb Lane in Hackney. In 2008, parking was not controlled. It now has “shared parking bays” where permit parking and casual public paid parking coexist. Payment is via mobile app (with Paypoint shop backup option).
Google Street View of part of Lamb Lane in Hackney, London. It is from June 2008 when most parking was not controlled.

London is quickly becoming a cycling city. Trips have soared to 1.5m a day. Our network of cycleways is now over 400km - and is expanding fast. We're currently extending Cycleway 4 in Greenwich - making the streets safer & enabling more people to switch their trips.

Whether to charge for parking (and when and how much) should be based on observations of parking demand/supply, not on revenue goals. The goal is not revenue but rationing scarce street parking so that parking and mobility systems work better. Revenue will follow as a nice side-benefit.
