Is there a better use of a Friday evening than getting high and arguing about whether or not Star Trek has sufficient epistemological humility? I think not.

DoorDash spent $1.4M trying to stop Zohran Mamdani from becoming mayor. This week's historic $131.5M enforcement action against DoorDash for underpaying NYC delivery workers shows why. Yet another reminder that the only thing that can beat organized money is organized people.

DoorDash Spent $1.4 Million Trying to Stop Mamdani From Becoming Mayor. Now We Know Why.
In a wage-theft settlement, DoorDash now has to pay its workers around 100 times what it spent trying to beat Zohran Mam

You’ve gotta use AI because it’s the future. But also it’ll take your job. But also it’ll create a paradise on earth and solve most of our problems. But also it’ll end humanity soon. But also you’ll get left behind if you don’t use it right now.

even if meritocracy were true and everyone ended up in the position warranted by their abilities, it wouldn't follow that people in working-class jobs deserve less political power or control over their labor.

Gloria Steinem has passed away. Long ago, my parents used to force me to go to church each Sunday. One time the pastor made a comment about "people who were destroying America, like Carl Sagan and Gloria Steinem." I liked Carl Sagan. Gloria Steinem was new to me. I took it as a recommendation.
My original trade paperback of Gloria Steinem's "Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions" (1st edition, 1983).

We need to stop calling these things robot dogs. Don't let the marketers soften their image by associating them with dogs. They aren't dogs. They're urban weapon platforms. They're authoritarian enforcement drones. They're wannabe terminators.

Most of the land in most farm counties is owned by 1-5 families. They run the place like their own personal kingdoms. There is SO much resentment and straight-up fury about this in rural areas. The fact that no political party's even really trying to speak to it is wild.

Most rural areas have a ruling class. And they want cheap unfree workers & to pass their fiefdoms on tax-free forever. It ain't rocket science. The fact that we're scared to talk about THAT, ime, is what's costing us a lot of rural voters!

*standing up on the plane* Star Trek: Deep Space Nine remains one of the best sci-fi shows because of its embrace of complicated characters, moral ambiguity under the surface of what others see as a utopian mission statement, and a standard twenty episode season giving the show a chance to breathe.

This is as close to John Knox / John Calvin with laser beams coming out of his eyes as you’ll get from modern PCUSA constitutional amendments.
"The church rejects any ideology that seeks to establish Christianity as a privileged or dominant force through the power of the state, or that conflates religious identity with national, racial, or ethnic supremacy. Such ideologies, in all their forms, are incompatible with the example and teachings of Jesus Christ, constitute a theological error, undermine the church's faithful witness, and are contrary to the church."

When I was a 10 year old Baptist kid I bought a “Catholic Digest” and hid it. It was thrilling. I also taught myself the rosary and used to secretly say Hail Marys. It was about the same level of forbidden as yoga and transcendental meditation and was a big, secret rebellion.

Maybe 200 years from now, this extraordinary picture will be like that. "Look, Roger." "Yeah yeah next time I get the window seat."
