As others turn away from their obligations to international development, it's welcome that the Irish Govt has announced an increased of €14 million in the budget. However, in the face of devastating climate impacts, protracted conflict & humanitarian crises we had hoped for a meaningful increase.

I understand that paywalls are annoying, but the grim reality for everything right now, is if you want something to exist, you have to put money towards it. Every creative person is having their life's work hoovered up by AI companies. Layoffs never end. Private equity keeps making things worse.

Iran has hit another vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. That’s the ninth in five days, the highest rate in the entire war.
UKMTO has received a report of an incident within the Strait of Hormuz.
The Master of a tanker has reported being struck by unknown projectile, causing damage to the engine room.
The crew have been reported as safe and there is no environmental impact reported at this time. Authorities are investigating.
Vessels are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO.

We grew wheat for hundreds of years. Just recently we lost knowledge of the seed varieties that worked in different parts of the country as subsidy policy incentivised barley production for animal feed. That seed knowledge has been re-discovered and trialled by crop scientists in UCD.

I think the fact that there are three partners in this - I mean DCC, the residents, & the waste collection businesses - make it particularly difficult. Trying to find a solution that suits all 3 is hard! (The bins & caddies would be more expensive for residents than the bag arrangement.)

Under the current system we have bags for recycling, and then bags for general rubbish, but no food waste collection. The odd person might have a private compost bin or whatever but obviously that’s also difficult given the space constraints.

I think buried within it all there might be a EU (?) directive (?) to separate organic waste. “Food waste segregation is required under European regulations. Separating food waste allows it to be treated through composting or anaerobic digestion rather than being disposed of as residual waste.”

So getting involving in volunteering with a youth group last year (and showing up to the inaugural Parents' Association meeting at my kid's primary school this year) is being a real eye-opener for how much unpaid work is involved in making a community where community events and shit can happen.

The original Victorian Phibsborough Post Office was located at 336 North Circular Road. Designed by the Board of Public Works surveyor and architect J. Howard Pentland, it was built between 1892 and 1893, before it was unceremoniously demolished in 1974 to make way for the current post office.
