If only their approach the speed limits was what all modern cars did. We shouldn't have cars on our roads that can exceed the posted max speed limit in the country.

This iconic photo of Bertie Ahern in the Tolka flood waters in 2002, was taken by Colin Keegan, who died in traffic collision last Saturday. Colin was kind enough to let us use the photo for free in the first postcard campaign I ran in @foeireland.bsky.social in 2005. May he rest in peace.

I’ve hauled a ladder on my own cargo bike, and contractors in the Netherlands do it every single day. The limits of what's possible aren't dictated by the physical capability of the bike, they're dictated entirely by the quality of your infrastructure.

In 2014, a Dutch father threw a chair at the judge after a driver who killed his 2-year-old daughter and grandparents received just 120 hours of community service. The sentence was later increased to 15 months. Can't say I blame the man one bit, a laughable and insulting sentence.

Umbrella use is an indicator sign of a healthy city. People used to actively moving about their urban spaces know that simple tools mitigate weather concerns. Alternatively, this is why you see North Americans getting soaked in the rain. They know nothing beyond car to door, door to car transit.

Our built infrastructure robs kids of their freedom of independent mobility. Streets are dominated by oversized vehicles, piloted by aggressive and distracted drivers where one mistake can turn lethal. We sacrificed child development to subsidize the auto industry.

Monday morning outside Rotterdam Centraal, thousands of cyclists stream toward the station in a carefully choreographed flow. What you’re seeing is the power of systems thinking—the bicycle and train both succeed because they work together seamlessly, where each mode extends the reach of the other.

Amsterdam: where cars are pulled over by horses.
Two police officers on horseback, one on a white horse and one on a dark horse, issue a ticket to the driver of a blue SUV they have pulled over on a cobbled Amsterdam street. Gabled canal houses and parked bicycles are behind them. Bold white text on black reads: “Amsterdam: Where cars are pulled over by horses.”

It’s remarkable how many people can move on a street when those people don’t feel the need to always take a massive car with them. Mobility in cities is about space.
Busy European street with buses filled with people in a long line of people on bikes, waiting for the light to change in a separated, protected bike lane. Imagine if all those people or each in a separate car.
