Eritrea has open ended conscription for all citizens aged 18-40. Attempts to evade (like leaving the country) are severely punished. That's why most asylum applications are granted.

Not sure how it has taken me this long to realise the pleasing circularity that Canary Wharf is now the heart of the Isle of Dogs and is named after the Canary Islands, whose name derives from the Latin for Isles of Dogs.

My mother, who has a lifetime award of Attendance Allowance, read out one of the articles from The Times on Sunday night about how terrible it was that some claimants hadn't been reviewed in 16 years, expecting us to agree with her outrage. My sister and I did not, very firmly.

Happy Indigenous People Day. In 1668 the English invaded St Lucia & St Vincent in the Caribbean & had their arses handed to them so badly by the Kalinago Islanders that they left 1,000 dead English behind & had to agree a treaty giving the Kalinago the right to roam freely on English islands ✊

Here for the least polluting car it's about £35 a year. But a visitor permit for the day is at £8 which is ridiculously expensive and you can only get 30/year. It feels really unfair, surely it's better not to be taking up a space permanently?

researchers showed 1,950 people videos of cats and asked them to identify whether the cats were tense, fearful, or relaxed. while people were remarkably bad at this task, men especially struggled. this is probably not extremely surprising to anyone who has used a dating app.

Noel Streatfeild, either in her autobiography or a novel, wrote about children who had posted so many treasures into the hole where their rocking horse's tail had been that they had to perform surgery on its tummy to get them out. I guess now he can deliver his own socks to the washing machine?

RIP Chris Wickham. Unlike so many historians who emphasise particularities and contingencies, he was the master of constructing grand, coherent, beautifully rendered worlds out of his evidence. This, from his 2021 Past and Present essay, is a masterpiece of historical writing.

All constables are summoned to have the rules read to them so they cannot plead ignorance.
