Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

It's not just that people view cars and bikes as equally dangerous -- it's that they then use these examples of red light running to argue *against* safe bike infrastructure. Drivers are never to held that standard for automotive projects!

This fire burned neighborhoods I grew up in, places my family and our friends still live. Thankfully everyone evacuated in time yesterday; so many don’t yet know if they have homes to return to. Sobering and surreal.

I do think pinning this on specifically Taco Bell is weird since many confirmed cases aren’t people who ate at Taco Bell at all and we know the actual source—Taylor Farms—distributes lettuce and other produce to many, many other large food businesses

This is a solid and even-handed article. I'm glad it makes 3 important points: 1. Many kids are riding high-speed e-motos and not e-bikes 2. The e-bike panic has the potential to hurt riders who depend on these bikes 3. Kids want to and deserve freedom of mobility without cars!

What could you create/make by next summer to lessen suffering in some part of your world? Let that question be your guide and hold yourself to making something of whatever size and impact by that time. Hold yourself to the commitment. No one else needs to know but you will.

15 years ago, I biked into Portland early in my third bike summer. "Tuesday's yours if you want," I'd texted. As it turned out, Kerri did want it and said yes; we met up early afternoon for what proved to be an epic seven-hour hike, pausing only because it got dark and we were hungry for fish tacos.

Authoritarian regimes benefit from people who are not smart enough to get promoted in traditional ladders but ambitious enough to commit crimes in their efforts to get ahead. Regimes give them a path. As we reduce education, as we reduce real opportunities, we are creating perfect conditions.

I thought this point Eric made about how libraries are early introductions to a social contract was really interesting, too:
“And what I think is so amazing about that is not only do you start to feel like you you are welcome in and belong in this place, the public library, but also you start to learn what it means to be part of a community. Because, let’s say you love Curious Georgebooks and you take out a Curious George book. You get the generosity of your society because it’s like “Here, take this Curious George book home, it’s free. Just bring it back and keep it in good shape. Don’t tear out the pages. Don’t write in it.” And you learn that you want to do that—not only because they tell you—but also because when you return it, you want to get the next Curious George book. And you realize that if the other kids in the community don’t return the book, or don’t take care of their books, you won’t be able to take it out. So, you learn mutual obligation and reciprocity from an early stage.”

I love this section because it reinforces that fighting car dependency is really about enabling freedom of mobility
Conversely, in cities such as Delft in the Netherlands, where we live, authorities have worked for a better balance of space allocation for walking, cycling, public transport and motor vehicles. As a result, Delft’s public spaces are vibrant and active with all types of people moving in social and connected ways. As our family discovered after moving here from Canada, children are able to roam more freely, older adults and disabled people maintain access to their communities, and women feel safer to travel independently.
