With the worst(?) fraternity in the news, I'm reminded of some friends of mine who started their own frat in college and because of their recruitment gained enough influence on the school's fraternity council to pass stuff like alcohol bans.

As an American, I may be missing some cultural cues, but seeing Keir Starmer announce that he's leaving Parliament was bizarre because I never expected to see the moment a man becomes resigned to never again maintaining an erection

Back during the election somebody pointed out how weird it was that Dubya, Bill Clinton, and Trump were all the same age. I didn't consider that a lot of good people were also born in 1946.

People signing on to Rowling properties who protest that it's just a paycheck and they don't agree with her views are either lying or haven't read their contracts. Signing up with her is joining the culture war on the wrong side whether you want to or not

The fun thing about Western politics is that spread out as we are it's unlikely that I'll know who you are at a glance if you're running for office, but if I do... then I know your family, their entire deal, and your history up through and possibly including college

It's a weird time for me to be hanging out by myself on election day. I spent so many years with campaigns where election day was a *thing* that involved hectic scrambling for every last minute voter. It's all mail now.

Worth noting that all of this applies to everyone. Trans people are only demanding the same consideration as everyone else and the efforts to keep them from that are also a burden on everyone else.

I feel like the AI use in games and movies mostly stems from some management figure demanding it directly because of stupid investment, but also from artists confronted with arbitrary requests that are so nonsensical that they're left with no idea and no ready references... so they ask the machine

One of the things that grates on my library research background is social media's taste for a/b testing. I can understand the marketing urge to try and tailor a product to appeal to the widest audience, but, if you're trying to convey information and meaning, an inconsistent message undercuts that.

How's US military recruitment going these days? Who's signing up for deployment in an even stupider forever war? Destroying universities through funding cuts and the imposition of MAGA cultural commissars makes the GI Bill less of a deal. No station overseas with one of our soon to be former allies
