Regular grown ass people who've decided to take a certain political stance have history and life choices that support their views. They're not going to be open to conflicting views because there are sandwiches. If you're trying to have a productive political discussion, grab an unregistered voter

There's a certain naivete that comes from professional politicos and academics where they're surrounded by students who are developing their worldviews and are open to change, or political mercenaries who make their public support transactional. They're up for a bit of amicable chitchat over coffee

ADHD is starting a conversation with "what do you want to do today" and less than one minute later derailing it with "if you got a tamagotchi where you looked after a vagina it would be a fannigotchi" and any hope of having actual plans for the day dissolve into nothing

Generations are marketing categories as much as genres are. Disturbing that generation labels used to solidify once a cohort had some spending money but now they're decided at infancy

Despite some horrific fire deaths and full bore Nader campaigns to regulate or eliminate flammable bedding and baby clothes, I suspect part of the required warning is also a very circumspect 70s way of telling people "put your cigarette out while you feed the baby"

I can understand working at the death factory for a payout and rationalizing it way too long. When conscience sets in, or consequences start looming, just hit the bricks and do better. Making your exit a reputation-burnishing cash grab is extra shitty

The legislation might not noticeably improve, but at least it'll be refreshingly quiet

Giving in to this extortion is just giving him a lever that he'll use again. See the accommodations the UK made for favorable tariff treatment that was gone in a fit of pique over Greenland. And every leader will be crucified domestically for not already using heroic measures to lower fuel costs

I don't know if there are more barriers to developing new products using current AI tech, or if it's just kind of limited in what it's useful for, but we've mostly seen mediocre variations on the same stuff rather than any big swings

We're enough years into this being a consumer facing technology that you'd expect some hints of the stuff we haven't thought of. There were tons of janky failures in the early internet years that just took refinement or improvements in infrastructure to have viable uses later.

I was always jealous growing up when we would have days-long electricity outages from snow storms taking out power lines. Fort Collins never did because they buried that stuff

I'll admit that the condensed cream of soups are super salty, but my casserole making upbringing has to defend that the relatively small regular modern size cans of this stuff can do the job. Cream of chicken or broccoli can introduce flavor to pasta or potatoes for super cheap

Went out for a smoke and let a delivery person into the building. It was not my delivery and I can only smoke do much

If you want to get trashy but add a bit of flavor, you can substitute a can of cream of [insert flavor] soup for the crema for possibly less than a dollar depending on store and brand

Kind of surprising how popular Nora Roberts/JD Robb is with the imminently dying. Do publishers know?

I was a librarian for a few years and had more than a few patrons who were on that threshold. It's kind of a gift to spend your time with people who have come to terms with the end. Also, they have hilariously filthy and not what you'd expect reading material.

Agendas and meeting notes are a ping-pong. We committed to do a thing, and to what degree did that happen. Further description is for people who have problems with the context. In public meetings that's important because you want to know who is an obstructionist prick who nonetheless votes right

I have seen that people who oversee end of life seem to find a certain grace, while everyone else in medicine is wracked by frustration at bureaucratic limitations. I don't know that I could go into healthcare. Not that I could afford it anyway

Tom @stealthisbook.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
People really need to recognize what recording a meeting is for. In anything that isn't some official public meeting, it's mostly for accountability for people who've committed to something and as a one-time aide de memoire for whoever sends out the summary. Otherwise it's mostly for the opposition

Dangerous gain of function? WTAF can that mean? Has a mortar pointed in an unexpected direction gained a dangerous gain of function? Would a logistic restructuring that allows for more and bigger boom booms mean that they've committed a dangerous gain of function?

Not necessarily eugenics, but in this case definitely eugenics. The worst part is that official systems will be uniformly and unerringly directed to parrot whatever mad shit a single guy has bad opinions about.

I'd have posted who those dudes were, but I did some searches and the leading guys either aren't on bluesky or haven't posted anything in years, and being political science people they now have jobs that might scrape names.

Then one guy twigged that the frat they affiliated with, Kappa Alpha Order, was super racist with roots going back to Robert E. Lee. Dude spread the news and they exploded the whole thing in revulsion. So they made a frat, reformed the system, and then fucked off laughing all the way. Dudes rock

Tom @stealthisbook.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
With the worst(?) fraternity in the news, I'm reminded of some friends of mine who started their own frat in college and because of their recruitment gained enough influence on the school's fraternity council to pass stuff like alcohol bans.

How does one combine the weedy Boulder diet with the robust eastern plains farmer diet like that? It makes no sense! I can testify to the farmer breakfast followed by midmorning diner coffee break that may include pie, then home for lunch, and a big dinner. Stopping for all that other nonsense?

There are so many scrub Dems who've already announced interest in running for president. Both current Colorado senators and the governor have expressed interest. Gavin Newsom is fully in heat for the nomination and presenting for every possible right of center constituency. Do we need a Rahm?

I was sad when I tried it a couple times that it didn't generate new text. Then I spent the next hour asking multivariate, hard to parse nonsense questions because fuck those guys and their token budget

Yes... but also those guys aren't generally at all happy with the women their age who are still "fun" and that's got its own kind of ick. I can recognize that my age cohort is getting gradually more brain poisoned, but that doesn't make me particularly want to seek out younger, more naive people

I worked at a convenience store where the gas prices were set manually in the morning by the manager. Sometimes he forgot and we lagged everyone else in a big price spike... lines immediately formed down the block. McDs is gonna have those days all the time

The sheer effort that people put into their coupon clipping hauls and the success of apps like GasBuddy makes me think that's not at all exaggerated.

I think they're underestimating just how much pain they're inviting by introducing arbitrage. Not just that one of the selling points for fast food is predictable pricing, but store operations are gonna suck if 1 in 20 customers insists on paying cash or juggling between phones for the best price

Especially since violating editorial guidelines would've had a totally separate disciplinary process, this seems like a baldly political attack

We mostly didn't. In a very attenuated way, we elected the presidents who nominated the supreme court justices who altered the interpretation of statutes that let this be a thing.

Student newspapers either operate entirely on vibes or else have guidelines that are several inches thick. This kid went through a whole process before adding that disclaimer, which suggests to me that the paper had standards and practices in place

Seriously, why is legislation like this even coming up when there are so many ways for the minority to spike it or at least slow it down?

I'm not entirely sure machine learning has approached the complexity of real physicality. I think the awe people feel for this technology stems from coming from a relatively abstract but structured field. Engineers got mad stories
