The Sharp Tranket transistor radio (1960)
A radio that combines the design language of old American muscle cars and the spacerace. The top is forest green with tailfins, the bottom is ivory white, and the front is shining silver, on a silver stand. Up top we find a single antenna, a red power/volume dial, and you turn the 'intake" of the rocket to change the stations (the tuning display is immediately behind the engine, incoporated into the body).

US Postal Service To Start Exploring Its Always-On Surveillance Options
Here comes the latest in ho-hum dystopia. And by that, I mean surveillance creep has become such a regular occurrence that it takes something truly Overton Window-breaking to gain traction with the general public. But that's no reason to let this slide by without pointing it out. The government (at all levels) has a lot...

Today would’ve been my friend Tom Matano’s 79th birthday. Tom designed cars like the NA Miata, NB Miata, and FD RX-7. If you love Miatas, you have him to thank for many things that make them special. It’s important to remember people. Thank you for remembering Tom with me today

"Gerald Jonas of The New York Times thought that the novel 'may have been merely a first draft (and an abandoned first draft at that), but this book is not Dick at his best.'" And yep, "an abandoned first draft of a PKD story" describes Trump+MAGA much better than "PKD at his best" ever could.

This paper makes school closures look pretty good! It finds they are the second most effective NPI overall, behind only masking, and argues that cost doesn’t justify it. But to get to that $26mm number they need to use an absurdly high number for education value and still only end up at 2x VSL.

You know how every state seems to be trying to sue every platform? Section 230 says states aren't supposed to be doing this kind of thing, which we reminded in this amicus brief supporting a platform fending off this pre-empted nonsense to at least get to do it in federal (rather than state) court.

I have a hypothesis that a lot of entertainment is being "ruined" by optimization on the part of the people consuming it because the finite amount of time combined with the sheer amount of content means people have this psychological urge to accelerate to the end state as quickly as possible
