Well, it was wishfully happy news for a moment. To be fair, the odds of one destroyed data center silencing the whole army of disinformation bots seem a little bit fanciful.

Hackers Had A Live Feed Of Every ID This Verification Company Scanned. For Over A Year.
From the very beginning of this recent obsession with identifying everyone online (yes, they like to call it "age" verification, but it always ends up as identity verification), we've been pointing out that it was a huge privacy nightmare waiting to happen. Or maybe it wasn't waiting. Maybe it was already happening. This week a...

Sometimes, when a new article on climate change breaks, I commit to an act of extreme masochism and read the comments on Facebook. I can't quite decide whether society itself has become so very stupid, or if it's just the predominant demographic of Facebook these days.

Great statement from National Council of Women New Zealand over on Facebook about the NZ First Definitions of Woman and Man Bill. Women are standing up across the country to be clear that this bill does zero to help us and we don't want to hurt our trans whānau.
Screenshot shot of National Council of Women New Zealand statement on Facebook that says

National Council of Women (NCWNZ) believes that the Legislation (Definitions of Woman and Man) Amendment Bill is unworkable and unscientific in that it ignores innate variation of sex characteristics (that is, intersex people), exclusionary and discriminatory, and breaches human rights.

NCWNZ supports the statement by the Honorable Nicola Grigg, Minister for Women, when she said, "I'm not convinced that this bill will advance the rights and opportunities or the wellbeing of women and girls in any way, shape, or form in New Zealand.”

We urge the Minister to persuade her colleagues that this Bill is a waste of time and money. Time and money which could be used by the government on legislation that will improve the wellbeing of women. Time and money that could be used by cash-strapped and time-poor community groups to work on initiatives that progress the status of women instead of preserving the status quo.

Parliament is taking public submissions for the Legislation (Definitions of Woman and Man) Amendment Bill, click on the link below to make a submission.

There's no way that the current Government would have won the last election by setting out as policy the things they've actually done since and say they plan to do. That's the Overton Window shifting right there, and the door closing on everything New Zealanders thought was good about themselves.

Groan. Labour productivity is just (salaries + profits) / (hours worked). So, if your economy is increasingly low-wage, low-tech and service-focused (hi, work visas), and profits are siphoned offshore... voila, low productivity. [3/n]

There are many awful things I've not commented on recently. A marching column of blackshirts stomping along Queen Street on ANZAC day is just one of them. Still, I now have a better idea of what it would have felt and sounded like to see them singing the Horst Wessel song back in the day.

This. Every time you see a "successful" trans person, know we are just one transphobe away from losing everything. This is one reason why it is important for allies to actually ally when we're not around -- transphobes should know their views aren't acceptable to anyone.

"The Markets" evidently no longer trust the US, hence their running higher despite Trump purportedly extending the ceasefire (in which he insists on blockading Iran). How does the, reputedly, most capitalist nation on earth manage to lose the trust of the very markets in which its lifeblood flows?
A posting on the live-updates page of Al Jazeera on the US/Iranian conflict:

"Oil prices edge higher despite US announcing Iran ceasefire extension.

US crude futures have risen in early trade, even after the US announced an indefinite extension of its ceasefire with Iran.

The gains come as market uncertainty persists over the success of future peace talks and the fact that the Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed.

US West Texas Intermediate crude futures climbed as high as $90.70 a barrel. As of 22:15 GMT, the benchmark was trading at $90.26, up 59 cents or 0.7 percent, following a 2.8 percent surge during Tuesday’s session."

Discworld QOTD, from Feet of Clay
No more kings. Vimes had difficulty in articulating why this should be so, why the concept resonated in his very bones. After all, a good many of the patricians had been as bad as any king. But they were...sort of...bad on equal terms. What set Vimes's teeth on edge was the idea that kings were a different kind of human being. A higher lifeform. Somehow magical.
