Reminder that 'virtue signaling' started as an economist term that meant showing you have something the other party considers desirable

Well, it was wishfully happy news for a moment. To be fair, the odds of one destroyed data center silencing the whole army of disinformation bots seem a little bit fanciful.

I wonder if suspension/deactivation of a candidate's social media profile on the day of an election would go entirely unreported for any other major party leader in the UK?

I was Welsh and 17 at the time, and I still can't name them. I know they were around, but they're lost to the mists of time now I think. ... but not Catatonia. Them, the Manics, Super Furry Animals and the Phonics were the big four I think! *trails off singing about strange glue and horses heads*

I loved that that question was framed as "Good leaders change their minds about things sometimes. When have you changed your mind?"... ... and Luxon, obliviously as ever, basically said "I keep getting it right all the time. I don't change my mind" I guess he's just not a good leader then.

Hackers Had A Live Feed Of Every ID This Verification Company Scanned. For Over A Year.
From the very beginning of this recent obsession with identifying everyone online (yes, they like to call it "age" verification, but it always ends up as identity verification), we've been pointing out that it was a huge privacy nightmare waiting to happen. Or maybe it wasn't waiting. Maybe it was already happening. This week a...

Sometimes, when a new article on climate change breaks, I commit to an act of extreme masochism and read the comments on Facebook. I can't quite decide whether society itself has become so very stupid, or if it's just the predominant demographic of Facebook these days.

Much as I would love to get in on all the Coyote vs Acme hype, its release in Australia and New Zealand is fully 3 weeks later than elsewhere. It's not to much FOMO as it is knowing I'm missing out. Ah well. Good things come to those who wait... or not. Maybe both? *shrug*

Counterpoint: If he demotes the agitators, he will also look very weak, like a man afraid of those he gathered around him in cabinet in the first place. Luxon: Weakness personified. Just ask Winnie and David.

Plausible deniability was never really a thing for the UK media either. It was always obvious that Farage was getting promoted far above any level of reason, and with precious little criticism. Hell, Question Time was probably gutted they couldn't have the BNP on any more.

Great statement from National Council of Women New Zealand over on Facebook about the NZ First Definitions of Woman and Man Bill. Women are standing up across the country to be clear that this bill does zero to help us and we don't want to hurt our trans whānau.
Screenshot shot of National Council of Women New Zealand statement on Facebook that says

National Council of Women (NCWNZ) believes that the Legislation (Definitions of Woman and Man) Amendment Bill is unworkable and unscientific in that it ignores innate variation of sex characteristics (that is, intersex people), exclusionary and discriminatory, and breaches human rights.

NCWNZ supports the statement by the Honorable Nicola Grigg, Minister for Women, when she said, "I'm not convinced that this bill will advance the rights and opportunities or the wellbeing of women and girls in any way, shape, or form in New Zealand.”

We urge the Minister to persuade her colleagues that this Bill is a waste of time and money. Time and money which could be used by the government on legislation that will improve the wellbeing of women. Time and money that could be used by cash-strapped and time-poor community groups to work on initiatives that progress the status of women instead of preserving the status quo.

Parliament is taking public submissions for the Legislation (Definitions of Woman and Man) Amendment Bill, click on the link below to make a submission.

In all seriousness: with the two sides neck and neck in the polls, I think back to how the election was actually won, what was said in the debates, and what promises were made. If they'd spoke then as they act now, I'm not convinced we'd be here now. And if that's true then the public has changed.

There's no way that the current Government would have won the last election by setting out as policy the things they've actually done since and say they plan to do. That's the Overton Window shifting right there, and the door closing on everything New Zealanders thought was good about themselves.

Pretty sure they are mostly tolerant anaerobes, so likely respire by fermentation, hence the lacto in the name - they are a lactic acid bacteria which break down sugars to lactate.
