you shouldn't take an iced coffee to a job interview because you shouldn't be trying to get a job. you should be digging an enormous pit or a complex system of tunnels

what annoys me about people using the "individual solutions to structural problems" meme in car discourse is that a structural solution would *also* require you to drive less. There is no future where simultaneously humanity exists and you drive your car as much as today.

haven't updated this in a while but the latest is they changed my parents' marital status from "divorced" which i put on the form to "married" (for my dead father) and "widowed" (for my mother) because i guess it didn't occur to them that people can actually divorce before one of them dies

In my company, I am the person accountable for the correctness of docs to customers, i'm reaching the point where im about to ban engineers from writing docs. It's always subtly wrong (and ofc terriblly AI written) so i spend more time editing and verifying than i would have spent on writing it

I don’t like bringing the personal into the posting but if you feel comfortable publicly commenting (nicely, no fed posting) on the “let’s make employers pay 100K for H1-B visas” rule proposed by DHS, I’d appreciate it. My significant other would be effected by this and I love her very much

Today's news: "Hey so for that visit I don't have a visa because I was 11 yo and didn't have a passport. What information should I put into the form?" "Just upload a scan of the visa" Has *everyone* in the world lost the ability to read and think, or have i just been extraordinarily unlucky

hey is it good that the software they're making me use for immigration application has two separate typos and one sentence, and doesn’t have the concept of non-requires fields (so i have to fill out end date for my current job)
Question on immigration form: "Have you taken a test from IELTS, CELPIP, TEL, or TCF to assess your proficincy (sic) in English or Fench (sic)?"

I think "your contract-signing witness printed their name under 'witness (print name)' but we needed then to sign it" might be the point at which i give up on immigration entirely. I simply cannot live like this for the rest of my life.

visa is an entry document, not an immigration status document. You can be in the country entirely legally, **as determined by USCIS**, and have an expired visa - which is in fact the case overwhelming majority of people in employment-based status (either H1 or EB). What even is this policy.

This includes people who came here legally on a visa, applied for another form of status, and are just waiting for the US government to decide their case. People who haven’t done a single thing wrong.

This post is a great encapsulation why I hope to quit tech forever soon. It's supposed to be reductio ad absurdum for an anti-LLM argument, and in the meantime I'm sitting here like "...yes, this but unironically?.." Very alienating.

this is one thing where I'm firmly on the side of the teacher's unions: a lot of the 'criticism' of public school educators is simply 'why can't you all be the extremely self-motivated teachers of these intrinsically motivated students'

when i complain about my immigration problems i always feel a little bit like this picture, like sure it's a big problem for me personally but in the grand scheme of things etc etc and then i remember there literally *is* a war in my country that's like the whole problem
It's a meme with a girl from some tv show looking at you condescendingly and saying "i just want to tell you that some people have war in their countries"

look, you can object to ICM, PyCon etc being held in the US, and you can push for canceling these events, but you can't push for relocating them. There is simply no way to "just find a new venue" for thousands of people. It's not even a money problem. Venues of this size are booked years in advance.

The purpose of studying anything isn't the subject itself but to learn how to *think* like an expert about it. People outsourcing their thinking to genAI are not learning how to think, at all. Part of the cognitive atrophy that genAI immediately induces is no longer being able to understand this
