New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854
Taxing Entrepreneurial Wealth: Evidence from
Norway, 2021-2025
Marius A. K. Ring
WORKING PAPER 35854|
DOl 10.3386/w35854
ISSUE DATE October 2026
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021-2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an "exodus" of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times,
2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners' firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners' savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms.
Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms,…

Can someone explain this to me in simple terms? You have AI company experts saying "We expect to cause some kind of catastrophe next year." Whatever happened to Lloyds of London? Do these Masters of the Universe have insurance? www.axios.com/2026/10/09/a...
What we're watching: Many AI industry insiders told Axios they believe a major event will occur in the next six to 12 months.

Even with Democrats in control of the House and Senate, the companies see fractured politics as the norm, including within the Democratic Party.
Some of the most heavy-handed Democratic proposals include banning superintelligence or pausing advanced AI development.
Others have bipartisan support and even some industry buy-in, including a required kill switch on advanced AI. But experts have questioned the viability of trying to turn off all AI systems.
The bottom line: In a real crisis, Washington can set partisan differences aside. One Democratic aide pointed to cooperation during COVID and the 2008 financial crisis.

UPDATE: Judge April Perry denies the government's bid to keep all of this under seal — including the attorney's signature block. "The government has also publicly disclosed … that there is an OPR investigation in this case."
MINUTE entry before the Honorable April M. Perry: The Government's motion to seal 275 is denied. As already noted, the grand jury transcripts in this matter have already been made public - without any opposition from the Government. The Government has also publicly disclosed - in both court filings and open court - the fact that there is an OPR investigation in this case involving the prosecutors who were in the grand jury. See, e.g., Doc. 247 at 48-49. In addition to those two matters, the Government has also asked to seal the "Legal Principles" section of its motion, which sets forth basic principles of law, and the signature block of one of its attorneys. There is a presumption that materials that underpin a judicial decision are open to public inspection unless they meet very specific criteria. See Baxter Intern., Inc. v. Abbott Laboratories, 297 F.3d 544, 545 (7th Cir. 2002). No such criteria are present here. The Clerk of Court is directed to unseal 272 . Mailed notice. (jcc,) (Entered: 10/09/2026)

The Kennedy Center's Trump-installed Board MUST produce financial information for its 2026 fiscal year, a federal judge rules. Judge Cooper "highly doubts that the Center has operated without core financial reporting over the past year." Doc buff.ly/3CFYynC
As for burden, the Court highly
doubts that the Center has operated without core financial reporting over the past year. Surely the Center has ready access to periodic income statements, balance sheets, cash flow reports, and budget documents that reflect actual financial performance over FY 2026, not just projections.
The Center should be able to gather these materials from existing sources without having to query its “updated” financial system for bespoke reports. If that is not the case, standardized
reports will do. So, although Plaintiff’s exhaustive requests are unduly broad given the expedited timetable, the Court hereby orders Defendants to produce FY 2026 financial statements of the nature noted above sufficient to show the Center’s financial performance and condition over FY 2026.

The takeaway from Bo French suggesting Asian students are “foreigners” and the tepid GOP response is that the Trump-era Republican Party is increasingly explicit about its belief that the only good immigrants, and the only real Americans, are white. (Gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
The Afrikaner policy is illuminating, because it proves the catch-22 facing nonwhite immigrants: If you are poor, you are a moocher, and if you are gainfully employed, you are taking a job from a hardworking American. The only way to be a good immigrant is to be white and Christian.

Bo French, who is running for a seat on the Texas Railroad Commission, has taken this idea a step further, suggesting that the only way to be an American is to be white and Christian.
