sorta funny that in AI discourse you have STEM folks arguing that it’s possible to understand the world through analyzing texts and humanities folks arguing that that can’t work

Take shamefully stolen from eugenics twink but it is funny how porn is often considered one of the major vices of the digital era but unlike infinite scrolling algorithmically curated content it has a very obvious end state where you get on with the rest of your life

1-panel SMBC comic update. A man with a beard sits in the left corner, agitated, stating "Bill Gates put microchips in me! Hundreds of ‘em!" A man wearing glasses swiftly turns towards him, asking "really? What year? Do they have onboard memory? Where are you sleeping tonight?" The caption below the comic reads "The RAM shortage takes a dark turn."

It’s not even the most important angle on what’s happening lately, but it’s worth mentioning that we’re going through the “Deep Blue but for all games of any kind” moment

Andrew Wiles, as part of the Clay Institute's scientific advisory board, hoped that the choice of US$1 million prize money would popularize, among general audiences, both the selected problems as well as the "excitement of mathematical endeavor" [6] Another board
member, Fields medalist Alain Connes, hoped that the publicity around the unsolved problems would help to combat the "wrong idea" among the public that mathematics would be "overtaken by computers".?]

Probably the most disheartening thing I see regularly in AI discourse is the number of trans, neurodivergent, and disabled people saying "AI has been transformative to my life and has relieved many of my pain points" and that being responded to with "No it hasn't. You're delusional. Fuck you."

How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been? danluu.com/zitron/

Feb 2024: "I believe we're reaching the upper limits about what generative AI can do and how accurate its outputs can be."
        Wrong4
March 2024: "Have We Reached Peak AI?"; another prediction that hallucinations mean that AI progress is limited to then-current levels
        Wrong
April 2024: "As I previously warned, artificial intelligence companies are running out of data ..."; another prediction that models can't improve because there's no more data
        Wrong
June 2024: OpenAI growth is stalling (with the implication it will continue to stall), which will lead to some kind of collapse of OpenAI
Wrong (it could be the case that OpenAI will collapse but, if so, it won't be due to any kind of growth stall from 2024)
July 2024: "Generative AI, as I said back in March, is peaking, if it hasn't already peaked. It cannot do much more than it is currently doing, other than doing more of it faster with some new inputs"
        Wrong
July 2024: "Generative AI models aren’t getting more energy-efficient, nor are they getting more “powerful” in a way that would increase their functionality, nor are they even capable of automating things on their own [July 2024]"
        Wrong5
August 2024: "generative AI is a dead-end technology that has peaked”
        Wrong
August 2024: re-iteration that the AI bubble has 3 quarters to prove itself (from March 2024) or there will be a collapse
        Wrong6
September 2024: "o1 shows that OpenAI is both desperate and out of ideas", with a re-iteration of the idea that models can't improve due to lack of data
        Wrong
Oct 2024: OpenAI's forecast of $3.7B revenue in 2024 and $11.6B in 2025 and $100B in 2029 are absurd, "a statement so egregious that I am surprised it's not some kind of financial crime to say it out loud"
Wrong (2025 goal exceeded, 2029 TBD but not an egregious financial crime level of implausible)
Oct 2024: "[OpenAI revenue] growth is already slowing…

1. AI bots are hacking services 2. It's not hacking, the front end guys just put a curtain over an open safe and called it security. Any idiot could do it 3. That's what hacking actually is and now any idiot can do it.

current feelings around AI: the CEOs shoveling slop into everything should be in jail but the guys spending upwards of $60,000 on elaborate, janky home rigs to run local models for no reason other than to see if it works are engaging in a long and semi-honorable tradition of computer toucher shit
Reddit post from r/localllama of a user "Setting up of a 16xGB10 (DGX Spark) cluster

Preparing this to be able to run locally frontier level open models.
