NEAR DARK is still the best American vampire film. It rejects most European/gothic tropes and rewrites the vampires as purely American myth figures: bikers, cowboys, traveling serial killers, Civil War soldiers, and gangsters.

I don't love dunking on folks but it's so fucking funny to me that Trump was convicted of 34 felonies 2 years ago, faced no punishment, and went on to win the presidency a second time and journalists are still like, "hmm, I have an inkling that maybe he believes he's above the law for some reason."
Post from NYT reporter Eric Lipton

"What an odd moment in United States history.

A U.S. president is running an overtly political campaign advertisement, right before midterm elections, paid for by the U.S. government.

Trump appears to believe he is immune from any kind of legal limit."

After 9/11, the US built a separate system of justice — a national security exception to the Constitution — that largely targeted Muslims. While non-Muslims were assured it would never apply to them, that assurance has expired. It is now being used to take aim at immigrants and the left.

The Constitution protects no one on its own; it did not stop Japanese American internment or the FBI’s COINTELPRO. When a court accepts that a Muslim individual’s speech is terrorism, that ruling becomes law for all. The ground Muslim defendants lost is the ground all of us were standing on.
