#OTD In 2009, the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) and its Centaur upper stage crashed as planned on the lunar surface. The mission successfully confirmed that water ice resides in a permanently shadowed crater at the lunar south pole.

False claims about Aboriginal rock art and aliens were once fringe. Researchers fear AI could push them mainstream
Archeologists warn AI summaries can repeat false claims about 12,000-year-old rock art from Western Australia’s Kimberley region being painted by aliens Warning: This article contains historical records that use racist and offensive language, and descriptions of events that will be distressing to some readers Traditional owner Warren Barunga says he is angry that people are misusing his people’s sacred rock paintings. The ancient Gwion Gwion and Wandjina figures, found in the Kimberley in Western Australia, have long been used in false claims that they were created by aliens or vanished civilisations. Today was a pretty good day because @hknorton.bsky.social helped me make the case to the Colorado Historical Preservation Review Board that they need to have room in their resource-numbering system for heritage located off the Earth. Behold object 5ET01: the Mars 2020 (Perseverance) back shell.
The back shell, as manufactured by Lockheed Martin Space in Littleton, CO, around 2019. It is a 4.5 meter wide truncated cone with different sized and shaped ports. It protected the Perseverance Rover and Ingenuity helicopter through the entry, descent, and landing phase ("seven minutes of terror") of the mission. The back shell on April 19, 2022, 14 months after impacting the Martian surface in Jezero Crater. The bottom edge of it is severely fractured from the impact. The parachute lies strung out from the back shell to the upper left.

Observations from Hubble have revealed a huge decagon encircling Saturn’s south pole! This giant, evolving 10-sided atmospheric wave is remarkably similar to Saturn’s famous hexagon at its northern pole, but is also distinctly different. Read more 👉 esahubble.org/news/heic2612/ 🔭 🧪
Side-by-side comparison of two views of the gas giant Saturn, labeled “August 29, 2025” at the top left corner. At left is a straight-on view of Saturn, a globe with pale yellow horizontal bands at the equator and orange and pink at the mid-latitudes. Some bands towards the north and south pole have a light blue hue. There are prominent horizontal rings circling at the equator. At right, labeled “Saturn’s south pole,” the south-polar view of Saturn shows concentric bands in its atmosphere, mostly tan and orange, surrounding a dark central region that has a 10-sided outline. A small, dashed circle at the very center of the pole with an “X” inside denotes missing data.

An overhead view of the Viking 2 landing site, based on the surface photography and available maps of the sample field and various references. This was drawn with ink on a scratchboard sheet which had a printed gray dot screen on it, scraping away the ink for the lighter tones and highlights.
This is a detailed scratchboard drawing, essentially a map, of the Viking 2 landing site in front of the lander. The sampling field was mapped in detail by the mission team and that as well as other sources using stereo plotted placement of features were consulted along with the surface photography. This task was made simpler than that of Viking 1 by the flat nature of the surroundings with the rocks bases etc. more readily determined. This portrayal was drawn on one of several gray dot screen printed scratchboard sheets given me in the 80's by Chesley Bonestell during one of my visits to his Carmel house and studio. He said they were quite old even then.

A rapidograph technical fountain pen was used to add the inked details as dark dots and areas, and the highlights were scraped away with an X-acto knife with a #16 blade, a narrow one tapered toward one side rather than the center. The result is thus entirely defined by black and white with no gray 'continuous tone' detail. I have one pristine sheet left which I dare not touch. #Sciart
