My article has just been published (Open Access) on the Japanese Journal of Political Science! It was initially a paper on how representative political systems might be reconciled with social equality, but after many roundabouts it's now a paper on the election/sortition debate. Hope it interests!

We need to stop begging elected oligarchs to pretty please defy the momentum of a system which rarely does what we want it to. Democracy is not when we beg. Tgere is a better way to do democracy, a way that is proven to produce better outcomes. A way that is easily accomplished without a revolution

Markets is better! Currently, the U.S. system is inherently undemocratic. New methods such as ranked-choice voting, sortition, randomly generated representation, may have better outcomes for all. Deciding policy by vote has its flaws, but it's possible that there may be a better way. If you put

Certainly not the ones with power, no more than the Republicans are. Republicans with power are allies of their most extreme base. Democrats with power are allies of a DC-centered neoliberal social order that is collapsing in on itself. Very few elected pols are true allies of the people.

We really need to just abolish the supreme court. Idk why we are clinging onto institutions which basically never work. There's nothing even remotely democratic about a supreme court. We could just use sortition to select a large jury. Judges shouldnt be writing the law, we should.

We've gotta stop calling it corruption. The US government has produced extremely consistent outcomes for its entire history. Every step of progress in our history has been the direct result of mass pressure AGAINST the government and the rich men who own our economy. We must build a real democracy.

Election 2024 caught three flavors of public opinion (if you don't count the number of third-party voters). Are we truly satisfied with this level of nuance in our political system? (There's a much better way to capture the wishes and desires of the people. It's called #sortition.)

Electoral systems seem to be doomed to this cycle. I want people to look into the idea of sortition, where power lies in a representative sample of the citizenry brought to assembly — like jury duty, rather than self-serving elites. Electoralism is oligarchic. Sortition is democratic.

Yeah if voting for democrats could reverse the trend, we wouldnt be where we are now lmao. Shit, if elections solved anything, we wouldnt be here. A republic is not a democracy. When 99% of politicians are malicious or incompetent, it's clear the system doesnt work. We cant keep begging for change.

If elections changed anything, we wouldnt have gotten where we are. I say this as someone who votes for every level of election. We cant keep hoping for uncommon exceptions to suddenly become common. The purpose of a system is what it does. There is a better way to do democracy. A way that works.

The purpose of a system lies in what it actually does. If you're tired of political incompetence or corruption, consider sortition. There may be more effective ways to achieve democracy, as a republic is not necessarily a true democracy.

Elections have to rely on an irremediably imperfect information distribution system that different voters access differently. The solution is not to put up a roadblock in the form of a poll test. The solution is to change the way democracies function so participants have equal access to information.

I was presenting on the shortage of politicians from the working class at an Ivy League school, and one of the faculty said during Q&A that it would be good to have literacy tests for candidates because it would keep workers out and silence concerns about worker officeholding. Food for thought.
