...A Citizen's Assembly IS suggested, but only to gain some public support and engagement legitimising whatever solution keeping governance within the tiny clique of the political classes they decide upon. Another way of maintaining the blinkers over the eyes of Citizens.

The design features you enumerate do not constitute independence or impartiality. They ALL favour electing politicians to government. There is no room in there for consideration of systems such as government by Citizens Assemblies selected by sortition. ...

It doesn't matter which electoral system a country uses. As long as it has Parties, there will be the inward-looking political classes competing for votes, egged on by a billionaire media, accepting donations from oligarchs and other nations. We need government by Citizens Assemblies/sortition.

Have you been on a jury? Most people will try to do the right thing. That’s fine for Parliament. The question becomes who then develops policy, administers the Government, etc. How do you ensure expertise is retained when MPs might only have one fixed term.

[some-subscribed-rss] New Post: Lame review of Hélène Landemore’s book, by Nicholas Gruen equalitybylot.com/2026/09/27/lame-r…
Teaser:

A new post at Equality by lot dismisses Foreign Affairs’ review of Hélène Landemore’s latest book as “tenaciously conventional” and “lame.” The author highlights the review’s closing paragraph—a safe, reformist shrug that praises citizens’ assemblies while insisting representative democracy shouldn’t be abolished—and invites readers to email for the full paper. It’s a sharp, quick hit for sortition fans tired of mainstream reviews missing the radical point.

We don't need to beg politicians to pretty please stop being evil corporate shills. Democracy is not when we beg our rulers for permission. Democracy is the permission we give. "Consent of the governed" is more than words, it's a pragmatic observation. Consent can be withdrawn. That's democracy.

Politicians will never actually represent us. The lie that they ever had before is just manufactured consent. Nobody trusts politicians. No one has ever trusted the government or the rich. We have never been a democracy. But we can be. Democracy is our unifying hope for a better world.

The US government has never existed separately from corporate interests. The economic elites and the government have always been a unified governing body, it's only ever been a matter of which branch of this economic-political machine held power.

I think we’re aligned but I’m more fundamental: I see the bond forged & strengthened thru elections themselves. Elections are the lever by which the wealthy few move nations of millions. I agree w/ the Greeks (Aristotle, even Plato) & H Landemore: Elections = Oligarchy; Sortition = Democracy.

I agree and I think the bond between economic power and political power passes via unequal voting (FPtP and Ware, for two examples). Voters concerned about their voting power seek a bandwagon, which is signalled by money.

If you’re an enemy of oligarchy, then whatever our differences - and we have some - you are my friend and brother. I want 2 things chiefly: 1. To break the bond between economic power & political power. And 2. To build a genuinely democratic citizenry; active not passive, energised not deadened.

@williampietri Somehow this reminds me of sortition (randomly selecting people for power) which in the US we mostly have for jury trials. I guess that's based on the idea that emotional capacity to handle power is randomly distributed, and we could do well to stop selecting against it.
