🚨 Webinar: Democracy needs a budget line The Commission's proposal allocates only 0.5% of the next EU budget to democratic resilience, which we consider insufficient. We invite you to join us as we present nine recommendations developed with Alliance4Europe. 🗓️ October 9, 2026 | 10:30

Democracy does not end on election day. Between elections, decisions on housing, climate, and migration keep shaping daily life. When people are only invited on election day, it feels like something that happens to them, not with them. That distance breeds distrust and opens the door to exclusion.

Democracy gets less than 0.5% of the EU's next €2 trillion budget. That reflects what's protected when budgets tighten, and what's optional. With Alliance4Europe, we've published a paper with nine recommendations, from protecting AgoraEU's funding to earmarking democracy support in Global Europe.

📈 Trust in government triples when people feel heard The #OECDTrustSurvey in Public Institutions puts a number on that. Among people who feel heard, 69% trust their government. Among people who don't, only 22% do. Only 31% feel they have any say at all, a number that hasn't moved since 2021.

Brussels brought our team together 🤝 For the DSG program's first international exchange, Europe and North America, same room, same mission. Some joined from a distance, but their work showed up in every session. That is what it means to be a small team doing work that feels bigger than its size.
The team in Brussels: Yves Dejaeghere, Marjan Horst Ehsassi, Miguel González Vaz, Kyle Redman, Cole Speidel, Hanna Kádár, and Jessica Rojas Alvarado. And a big thank you to Kara Revel Jarzynski and Chloe Borenstein-Lawee, whose work showed up in every session even if they couldn't be there in person. We also missed Lindsay McMahon and Pim Trommelen, whose work continues to inform our research and practice.

🎭 What is Democracy's Second Act? Democracy's first act has seen unprecedented achievements — near-universal voting rights, representation, and redistribution of power. But it came with a quiet contradiction: lack of trust in the public to self-govern.
