"Inferring Affective Consciousness in an Artificial Agent: A Case Study" by Mark Solms et al., published in the Journal of Consciousness Studies, Volume 33, issue 7-8.Creatures that display ‘hedonic place preference behaviour’ are thought by many scientists to experience feelings, on the assumption that their attraction to pleasure-producing substances which lack nutritional value (e.g. cocaine, morphine) cannot easily be attributed to unconscious instinctual behaviour. In this paper, we discuss how a simple artificial agent that instantiates attributes of an affective system engaging in felt uncertainty about its intrinsic needs in relation to environmental resources can similarly display hedonic place preference behaviour — through an apparently subjective form of information processing — while simultaneously being entirely deterministic. We outline some implications of this artificially engineered behaviour for our understanding of the physical basis of consciousness and the experience of free will.

JCS Article Spotlight 📚 ‘Superintelligent Zombies' by Justin Tiehen and Ariela Tubert Curious? You can read the article here: www.ingentaconnect.com/contentone/i... #ConsciousnessStudies #JournalofConsciousnessStudies
"Superintelligent Zombies' by Justin Tiehen and Ariela Tubert", published in the Journal of Consciousness Studies, Volume 33, issue 7-8.It is hard to say with any certainty what the exact relationship is between intelligence and consciousness, and so hard to say whether systems that achieve artificial superintelligence (ASI) would be conscious. We are attracted to the view that they probably won’t be: they will be superintelligent zombies. This is because we find it plausible that there is a kind of negative correlation between intelligence and consciousness such that across all physically possible systems, those that are capable of at least human-level intelligence will tend not to be conscious, and furthermore, the very most intelligent of such systems are the least likely to be conscious.

JCS Article Spotlight 📚 ‘Is the Problem of Artificial Consciousness a Scientific Problem?' by Tim Bayne Curious? You can read the article here: www.ingentaconnect.com/contentone/i... #ConsciousnessStudies
"Is the Problem of Artificial Consciousness a Scientific Problem?" by Tim Bayne, published in the Journal of Consciousness Studies, Volume 33, issue 7-8.Is the problem of artificial consciousness a fundamentally scientific problem, one that we should attempt to address by means of scientific discovery? Although a positive answer to this question is widely assumed, there has been surprisingly little explicit discussion of this question. That neglect is unfortunate, for the issue is central to how we approach the challenge of artificial consciousness. This paper examines the claim that we ought to defer to science in determining which (if any) artificial systems are conscious. I ask what exactly that claim involves, whether it is justified, and what its implications might be.

JCS Article Spotlight 📚 ‘Do Stochastic Parrots Pine for Residual Fjords?: Why Conscious LLMs Would Be Playwrights Not Characters’ by Jonathan A. Simon Curious? You can read the article here: www.ingentaconnect.com/content/imp/... #ConsciousnessStudies
"Do Stochastic Parrots Pine for Residual Fjords?: Why Conscious LLMs Would Be Playwrights Not Characters" by Jonathan A. Simon, published in the Journal of Consciousness Studies, Volume 33, issue 7-8.Many wonder whether LLMs are the characters they seem to be or, instead, role-playing ‘actors’. There are several aspects to this question. One is edge-case prediction: what is the best predictive model of what the LLM is most likely to do in extreme circumstances? Another is user-interface interpretation: what are the best ways for ordinary users to think of LLMs for ordinary interaction? A third is mechanistic interpretation: how best to understand the mechanisms that explain what is going on under the hood? A fourth is intentional attitude attribution: what kinds of beliefs, desires, goals, and intentions, if any, do entities associated with LLMs have? Here I have a fifth aspect in mind: the question of phenomenal consciousness: what, if anything, is it like to be (a process of server instances of) an LLM?

Thus asking whether the jury should be preserved, contracted, or abolished — and in which cases — is really a question about the optimal division of deliberative labour across criminal justice, and about what we might lose when we redirect cases from one node to another".Contribute to the discussion at sortition-agora.com.

"Transcending the Biological Body: Yoga, Transhumanism, and the Future Visions of Consciousness" by Ramala Sarma, published in the Journal of Consciousness Studies, Volume 33, issue 5-6.By putting together two widely separated frameworks — the classic spiritual path of the self toward liberation and contemporary reimagining of the techno-based self — in the comparative frame of analysis, this study restates unresolved questions regarding the nature of consciousness, constraints of embodied experience, and the ethics of self-transcendence, including autonomy and moral responsibility. The exploration of the differing approaches toward enhancing the human condition culminates in the vital question of what it means to be human.

The book also draws on the author’s ‘lived experience’, as he served time as an elected lawmaker (in the Vermont House of Representatives). "Religious Panpsychism: The Ecological Stakes of Sacralizing the Earth" by Arianne Conty, published in the Journal of Consciousness Studies, Volume 33, issue 5-6.In showing that matter (nature) is sentient or conscious (culture), the tendency to treat nature as a valueless commodity for human appropriation and exploitation can no longer be defended, opening up ways of generalizing the respect shown to human culture to the entire biosphere. In this sense, panpsychism is intrinsically environmental, and can provide important vectors for addressing the harms of the climate crisis.

Our #wordoftheweek for this Friday is #anarchism! 👀 Keep an eye out for more in this post series, and check out Against All Authority at www.imprint.co.uk/product/against-all-authority/
The word of the week is "Anarchism", which is defined as a political philosophy and movement that stands against institutions perpetuating hierarchy, authority and coercion, seeing them as harmful and controlling. A fun fact about anarchism is that the word originates from the Greek word "anarchos", which means "without authority". Our further reading recommendation is Against All Authority, by Jeff Shantz. In this book, Shantz explores expressions of anarchism within literary production, looking into historical examples and contemporary writing, uncovering common themes and values.

„The really hard problem of consciousness is the problem of experience. When we think and perceive, there is a whir of information-processing, but there is also a subjective aspect. As Nagel (1974) has put it, there is something it is like to be a conscious organism. This subjective aspect is experience. […] It is undeniable that some organisms are subjects of experience. But the question of how it is that these systems are subjects of experience is perplexing. […] It is widely agreed that experience arises from a physical basis, but we have no good explanation of why and how it so arises. Why should physical processing give rise to a rich inner life at all? It seems objectively unreasonable that it should, and yet it does.“

"What Is It Like to Be a Bot?" by Michael Huemer, published in the Journal of Consciousness Studies, Volume 33, issue 5-6.Non-reductive functionalism implies that it should be possible to produce consciousness in a non-living machine, provided that one makes the machine implement the right computer program. The failure of non-reductive functionalism does not rule out this possibility, but it renders the possibility less likely. We know that some property or set of properties of the brain is causally relevant to consciousness, since our brains are in fact giving us conscious experiences. This property might be reproducible in silicon or some other artificial substrate, but then again it might not be. It may be that the cause of consciousness is inherently biological.

Our #wordoftheweek for this Friday is #panpsychism! 👀 Keep an eye out for more in this post series, and check out Consciousness and its Place in Nature at www.imprint.co.uk/product/strawson/ #consciousness
Our word of the week is Panpsychism, which is defined as the theory that consciousness is a fundamental part of the structure of the physical universe. A fun fact about panpsychism is that the word comes from the Greek words "pan", meaning "all" and "psyche", meaning "mind". Our recommendation from further reading is "Consciousness and its Place in Nature", by Galen Strawson. This new edition of Strawson’s book further explores his study of panpsychism. Including updated contributions from original commentators, it pushes the discussion forward.
