Nice quote by Joan Robinson from the early 80s: "[...] social programs are slashed while defense budgets must rise to keep pace with the level of rhetoric. [...] What we have are programs that aggravate the economic crisis while the means of destruction are multiplied."

A good place to start understanding what's going on in Germany is this: By the end of the 50s almost all Germans convicted of war and other crimes were pardoned. However, the judgments of the German courts between 33 and 45 were only fully rescinded in the late 90s.

The way the dangers of "AI" are discussed is, in my opinion quite deliberately, going into a ridiculous science *fiction* direction. "AI" is not, and will not be, loose in the world. It's owned, deployed, and steered by specific firms and states in pursuit of profit, competition, and control.

Tristan Buckmaster, a mathematics professor at New York University, alleged that OpenAI moved on the problem only after word of his unpublished results reached the company. He had worked for nearly a year with Levent Alpöge, a mathematician employed by rival lab Anthropic.

Both men leaned on OpenAI's Codex assistant while assembling their own proofs, and the company can train on those sessions unless users opt out.
