TLDR: Residents in informal settlements are often blamed for destroying conservation land. But electoral strategy influences urban expansion in ways most models don't capture. Incorporating political dynamics could improve urban growth forecasts + shift accountability to actors driving change (7/7)

Limits: we can't resolve whether electoral competition causes urban expansion or vice versa — they could influence each other. our data is pre MORENA dominance. since parties use tailor strategies to their electorate, patterns in Mexico City may not replicate elsewhere. More cities needed! 🌆 (6/7)

Beth Tellman @socialpixel.bsky.social · 19/05/2026
Hypothesis 3: Informal urban expansion is higher in electorally competitive districts. Result: ✅ yes. (Figure 3 C/D) Built-up area grows faster where dominant party support is lowest — battleground districts where parties compete hardest for new voters. but its an association, not a cause. (5/7)

Beth Tellman @socialpixel.bsky.social · 19/05/2026
Hypothesis 2: Titles flow preferentially to core party voting neighborhoods. Result: ✅ yes. (Fig 3 A/B+ Fig 4) Both the number and area of titles are significantly higher in neighborhoods with strong loyal support for the dominant PRD party, rewarding their base, but varies across the city (4/7)

Beth Tellman @socialpixel.bsky.social · 19/05/2026
Hypothesis 1: Land titles increase in the months before elections, following the "political business cycle" Result: ✅ yes. Titles rise as elections approach — from ~7/month three years out to a peak of ~70 in the election month. Urban authorities time titling when voters pay attention. (3/7)

Beth Tellman @socialpixel.bsky.social · 19/05/2026
Over 70% of urban growth globally happens through informal settlements, where residents lack titles, services, and security. We mapped and regressed 18 years of land titles and built-up expansion in Mexico City alongside electoral data to ask: does politics drive where cities grow? (2/7)
