The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel is titled “things that are spooky”. We see a book of hexes, a skull, candles, a pentagram in blood, and vampire teeth. Pointing off panel we see a speech bubble that says “I love it”.
The second panel is titled “things that are cute”. We see a strawberry cake, a boba drink, a bunny plushie, and a cute notebook and pen. Again, we see a speech bubble pointing off panel that says “I love it”.
The third panel is titled “things that are spooky AND cute”. We see a row of cute decorative ghosts.
The fourth panel shows Sarah, the protagonist, completely freaking out at this combination.

People who don't rely on help from the state to exist (or know anyone who does) always assume that those who *really* need it can get it. That it's available and accessible for hypothetical "genuine cases". It never seems to occur to them that such a threshold of legitimate need does not exist.

For our friends' kid's second birthday, we deliberately bought them a load of noisy musical instruments that came in a big drum. Hilarious. Of course, we forgot that we were staying overnight after the party...

Funnily enough, some anthropologists think the domestication of horses was probably initiated by children because they wouldn't yet be wary of a large, non-predatory animal. They made friends first, then adults thought about riding them later on.

I so desperately want cis people to understand this - the GCs are not feminists, they dont believe in women's rights, they dont value the agency or rights of children. GC is an abuser, forced birther, misogynist, racist, anti working class manifesto of bigotry. Its Andrew Tate with a Chanel handbag.

1187) Goblinbot. Effectively a larger Mischiefbot variant; a menace to society in general and novice PCbots in particular. Sometime ally of Orcbot. Like all goblins, bad at everything except being a goblin - which is a very Small Robot trait to be fair. #SmallRobotsRemonstered #Halloween
A wide, ovoid robot with short, banded arms and legs and little cloven feet. It has big, pointed ears (one of which is pierced with a gold ring) and is walking along, carrying a wooden sword. It has a swept-back tuft of hair on its top and a big wide, spike-toothed grin; one of its teeth appears to be gold too. Its expression is one of sheer, small-minded malevolence. Text in the bottom right reads, "Small Robots Remonstered".

I keep trying to think of any historical example where a given technology's PROMOTERS AND TRUE BELIEVERS were like 'we are absolutely going to ruin your fucking life so be prepared like it's the end of the world'
Andrew Curran: Axios is reporting that the top labs are wargaming scenarios for the aftermath of a catastrophic event in the next 6 - 12 months, that some executives now see as being inevitable.

Axios: Top executives at Anthropic, OpenAl and other Al companies are privately gaming out scenarios for a public and political revolt after a catastrophic AI event.
Why it matters: These officials anticipate a large-scale event, most likely a cyberattack, that shuts down access to financial services, internet connectivity, or even power and water.

Edouard Harris: This is our view as well. Relatedly, average people will want to increase their level of personal resilience and preparedness as their resources allow. We will be publishing about this soon.

Nick Farina: Best ways to be prepared? Generators, water, books and DVDs?

Edouard Harris: Power, water, food, sanitation for most part. Parts of this depend on your geo latitude - solar vs propane for eg.

But also: set aside a computer that is not (and ideally has never been) connected to the internet. Buy faraday pouches and tape. Print out essential docs on paper.

That's a much better example than all the ones I gave, but I don't drive so didn't think of it!
110
Small Robots @smolrobots.bsky.social · 21h
And once that's achieved, it's onto how likely you'll get caught, and that's basically the only consideration. Same as it was for the petty shit we all did as kids.
060
Small Robots @smolrobots.bsky.social · 21h
The only difference between that stuff and more serious crimes, crimes that carry prison sentences or worse, are that the first hurdle, the empathy hurdle if you like, is higher. But everyone has their own reasons for making that choice, if they do. Things that make clearing it easier.
160
Small Robots @smolrobots.bsky.social · 21h
They could have made it a capital crime, and we'd still probably have laughed it off. It's pirating songs. Who cares?
150
Small Robots @smolrobots.bsky.social · 21h
Remember how record companies used to sue kids for millions for downloading about five songs? Severe penalties for minor crimes, and we all just shrugged it off. Because what are the chances of it being us next time? We knew we'd probably get away with it, and almost everyone did.
191
Small Robots @smolrobots.bsky.social · 22h
Then, having cleared that one, we thought, "Will I get away with this?" And the answer, for such minor infractions, is basically that the cops have better things to do and about a million other people are doing it, so what are the odds we'd be the ones who got in shit for it?
150
Small Robots @smolrobots.bsky.social · 22h
The first hurdle we cleared was, "Is this even really a crime? And should it be?" That's easy enough, especially if you're a teenager with poor impulse control. Nicking street signs or buying some pills off a scuzzy guy in a dark corner of a bar are fairly victimless crimes.
160
Small Robots @smolrobots.bsky.social · 22h
For example, we've probably all done some pretty minor crimes in our youth. Graffiti, vandalism, underage drinking, drugs, some file-sharing when that was a thing, whatever. Nothing that leaves us with a guilty conscience but stuff that we might theoretically have been punished for.
170
Small Robots @smolrobots.bsky.social · 22h
But if you've decided you're able to justify the crime to yourself, then it comes down to how likely you are to get away with it.
1100
Small Robots @smolrobots.bsky.social · 22h
Most of us law-abiding people don't act that way out of fear of the penalties. Laws don't (usually) exist for no reason. We don't steal because we know being stolen from sucks.
1110
Small Robots @smolrobots.bsky.social · 22h
No one's like, I'm gonna rob this store and there's a good chance I'll get caught, but fuck it, what's 10 years, eh? The assumed consequence is nothing.
180
Small Robots @smolrobots.bsky.social · 22h
I first said it to some American arguing in favour of the death penalty, like, 20+ years ago, but it remains true: no one who reaches the point of committing a crime plans to get caught. The calculus is based on the likelihood of it going wrong, because ideally you get away with it.

That's still how it's done in many indigenous societies, particularly in Polynesian cultures! If you see a Maori or a Samoan with a load of traditional tattoos, they probably had them done with bone or shell needles and natural pigments.

1975) Walkinghutbot. The ideal mobile dwelling for a little Covenbot who needs to creep through forests in Eastern Europe.
A robot in the form of a round hut with a thatched, conical roof with a little tin chimney poking out. The robot is walking along on two long, jointed legs with round feet that have a cleft in the middle. It has eyes over the open door that appear to be angry. Standing in the door is a Covenbot, a round robot with banded arms wearing a witch's hat, holding a broom, with a wart on one side of its face, smiling menacingly. The background is drawn in soft shading, and depicts a deep, dark forest, shrouded in mist.
