Ed was in a fucked up position. He knew it. His typical apolitical stance was being challenged in a way it never had been before. He told me that the words
"Free Palestine" and the image of the Palestinian flag were hurtful to a lot of people he spoke with. I told him that if those words were more offensive than tens of thousands of Palestinian children being killed by Israel, then there was a fundamental disconnect between where those people stood and where I stood. But he couldn't get past his public facing, "I don't take sides."

This isn't just a matter of political gamesmanship. The leadership of the BK Dems controls the selection of local judges, who have enormous, often *life-changing* impacts on the lives of everyday NYCers. And now they're insulating that process even further from any kind of democratic accountability.

Test scorers that still make the cutoff at a school (e.g., 5 people looking for admission to SI Tech all score 517 for the final available seat). How do you choose who gets that seat? I've been told that the criteria is objective, but it seems that there are going to be situations where people 7/x

Well rounded student? No one has EVER answered this question for me. My second question, perhaps, gets at the idea of whether this admissions criteria is entirely objective at all. You would only need to get 21 of 47 questions (45%) of the verbal questions right to be accepted. A student who got 40/47 questions right in BOTH sections would only score 500 on the SHSAT. How does this not just prioritize being good at one subject over the other as opposed to being a 6/x)

if you're trying to holistically assess students academically. I'll use my high school (Staten Island Tech) as an example. Apparently this year's incoming freshman class needed to score a 517 for entrance. If your raw score on the math section was 47 (the most points you could score) 4/x)

My 1st question is about the exam itself. Supporters of the current system say the exam is best metric to assess students for admission. How does that work when a student who aces one section of the exam and functionally fails the other, scores higher than a student who does competently in both 2/x)

"Over time it became difficult to distinguish the policies of Black and white mayors, as both were beholden to the police and corporations in their cities and thereby unwilling (and often lacking any real power) to advance policies to help rank-and-file Black Americans." Whew. That's Andre Dickens.
As the Democratic Party became increasingly concerned that advancing Black concerns turned off white voters, Black Democratic politicians and prominent activists faced a choice: advance in the party by downplaying and sidelining Black concerns, or advocate Black interests at the expense of their careers. Many chose the former. Contrary to conservative pundits who claim that he stoked racial conflict, Obama actually spoke far less about racial issues than his Democratic predecessors. Prominent activists shifted from pressuring Democratic politicians to being very defensive of them. Sharpton and others negotiated with mayors, presidents, and corporations, but grew unaccountable to Black America at large—operating more like celebrities than community activists. Over time it became difficult to distinguish the policies of Black and white mayors, as both were beholden to the police and corporations in their cities and thereby unwilling (and often lacking any real power) to advance policies to help rank-and-file Black Americans.
